Position: Correctional Officer / Corporal

Purpose & Job Related Requirements

Applicants with qualified certified BCOT prior experience may be eligible for higher placement/salary in the step plan.

Hiring Incentive

The position offers a one‑time $3,000 hiring incentive paid in $1,000 increments (not added to base salary).

Eligible newly‑hired Correctional Officer candidates will receive an incremental hiring incentive upon documented satisfactory job performance:

  • After successfully completing 3 months of employment – Payment #1
  • After successfully completing 6 months – Payment #2
  • After successfully completing 12 months – Payment #3 (total $3,000)

Continuation of this Recruitment/Hiring Incentive Program is subject to available funding and approval by the Manager.

Reports to:

Correctional Sergeant, Food Services Sergeant, Correctional Lieutenant (Diversion Center), Superintendent.

FLSA Status

Non‑exempt.

Classification

Personnel System – requires satisfactory completion of a twelve‑month probationary period.

Pay Grade

CR01 – Placement on the step plan depends on qualifications.

Safety Sensitive

Yes – subject to random drug testing per the Athens‑Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.

Purpose of Job

The primary purpose of this job is to maintain order and supervise inmates in the Athens‑Clarke County Correctional Institution, Food Service Center, or Diversion Center. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assurance of inmate count, supervision of inmate visitation, maintenance of facility security, coordination of inmate work details, performing regular inspections, ensuring cleanliness, controlling tools/chemicals, providing leadership over inmates, reacting quickly to jeopardizing situations, and performing other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule:

Twelve‑hour shifts, rotating days off.

Shifts:

6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. All Correctional Officers are required to work weekends. May be required to work on religious holidays. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Must work cooperatively with others.

When responsibilities include vehicle operation, the officer is responsible for safety, readiness, operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.

Emergency Position

This position is designated as an emergency position that requires attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions, such as inclement weather, utility failure, fire or other forced evacuations.

Minimum Training & Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Must be able to meet current certification requirements set forth in the Georgia Basic Correctional Officer Training program and obtain BCOT Certification in Corrections within twelve months of hire date.

Must possess a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

One year of Correctional Officer experience preferred.

Correctional Corporal Requirements

Additional requirements for Corporal candidates:

  • Two years as a BCOT certified Correctional Officer.
  • Must be able to obtain a certificate of Appointment of Notary Public (depending on area of assignment).
  • Must have P.O.S.T. Certification in Corrections and be in good standing.
  • Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field of study preferred.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensure inmate security by observing inmate behavior, detecting contraband, and conducting physical inspections.
  • Assist in organizing inmate activities and controlling inmate traffic between activities.
  • Transport inmates within and outside of the correctional facility as needed.
  • Assist in shakedown and head‑count processes; ensure all gates, doors, rooms, etc. are locked and secure as schedule dictates.
  • Monitor telephone, radio, and intercom systems.
  • Monitor inmates in isolation, segregation and sick rooms.
  • Fill in for other employees in their absence, assuming duties of shift supervisor as necessary.
  • Serve on disciplinary committee.
  • Provide processing of new inmates and outbound processing.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
