Tradesworker

This is an entry level position for the Construction and Facilities Management Department and is responsible for assisting in all phases of building construction, renovation, and maintenance. The purpose of this position is to assist in maintaining county buildings at an acceptable standard of safety, attractiveness, and utility. The variety of tasks to be performed and the occasional lack of specialized tools add to complexity of the work.

Errors may result in unsafe and/or unsightly work which could create legal liability, an unpleasant environment for employees, and a poor image for the county.

Guidelines included County Building Codes, work orders, construction specifications as shown on blue prints or designs, and instructions from the supervisor. Guidelines are usually clear and specific, but employee must occasionally choose the guideline which applies to a given situation.

Work is performed inside county buildings and outdoors where employee is occasionally exposed to cold or inclement weather. Employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Employee must wear protective devices such as glasses, masks or gloves when necessary.

Work is performed with employee intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching. Employee must lift both light and heavy objects frequently, climb ladders, possess a high degree of manual dexterity, and ability to distinguish between shades of color.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, representatives of other county departments and vendors.

Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical functions. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship of having a similar position for one to two years is desired.

High school diploma or GED equivalency is required. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the class of vehicle or equipment operated required.

• Performs building maintenance tasks including structural repair, electrical work, heating and air conditioning servicing and plumbing work.
• Performs general carpentry work on construction projects such as building concrete forms and hanging doors, windows, and sheetrock.
• Contacts representatives of county departments to receive information regarding type and location of problem.
• Performs renovation and emergency maintenance and/or repair tasks as needed.
• Operates bucket truck used in replacing light bulbs.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and standards used in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and heating and air conditioning work.
• Skill in operating bucket truck, various kinds of saws, plumbing equipment, and hand tools used in carpentry.
• Skill in oral communication.
• Skill in understanding and following oral and written instructions.
• Skill in reading blue prints.
