Work Schedule: M-F 8:30‑5:00pm, rare evenings & weekends. Ferry departs 8:30am daily.

This position will perform skilled trades work on the buildings and facilities located at the UGA Marine Institute on Sapelo Island. Duties will include general construction and maintenance responsibilities for a large research and education facility. Responsibilities may include building frameworks (partitions, joists, studding, rafters, wood stairways, window and door frames, hardwood floors), installing cabinets, siding, drywall and insulation, building tables and shelves, repairing broken water lines, HVAC repairs and maintenance, assisting with electrical repairs, and using heavy equipment.
After training, the employee will be responsible for purchases using UGAMart.
- Facilities Maintenance and Repair – Under general supervision of the Facilities Manager, perform general maintenance and repair services for all facilities. Maintain working knowledge of various trades (carpentry, plumbing, painting, welding, mechanics, etc.). Operate hand tools, power tools, and large equipment. Use UGAMart to purchase parts and supplies. May oversee unskilled or semi‑skilled workers on tasks. (
85% time) - Vessel Maintenance and Repair – Under general supervision of the Facilities Manager, perform general maintenance and repair services for small boats and trawling vessels. Tasks include removing biological growth, painting, and motor repair. (
10% time) - Additional Duties – All UGAMI employees are expected to take on additional duties as required. Special projects may include meal preparation for visitors/classes, cleaning duties, landscaping, supporting Island‑wide events. Some weekend and night work as needed. (5% time)
High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred QualificationsGeneral construction experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies- Extensive knowledge of general construction practices and facilities maintenance.
- Computer skills: email, word processing, general internet use.
- Competent at maintaining and repairing large research and housing facilities, including marine vessels.
- Good people skills and ability to work as part of a team.
Work in a hot, humid climate; tolerance of biting insects; lift 75 pounds.
Other RequirementsDriving is a responsibility of this position. Position is a trust position and has operation, access, or control of financial resources. Position requires no P‑Card. No direct interaction or patient care. No security access.
