SKILLED TRADES WORKER I
LocationOther South Georgia Area - Sapelo Island, GA (UGAMI campus)
Position SummaryThis position will perform skilled trades work on the buildings and facilities located at the UGA Marine Institute on Sapelo Island. Duties will include general construction and maintenance responsibilities for a large research and education facility. Responsibilities may include building frameworks, such as partitions, joists, studding, rafters, wood stairways, window and door frames, and hardwood floors. Installing cabinets, siding, drywall, and batt or roll insulation.
Building tables and shelves. Other tasks may include repairing broken water lines, HVAC repairs and maintenance, assisting with electrical repairs, and using heavy equipment. After training, this position will be responsible for purchases using UGAMart.
- Facilities Maintenance and Repair (85%):
General maintenance and repair services for all facilities under the general supervision of the Facilities Manager, including carpentry, plumbing, painting, welding, mechanics, etc. Operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and large equipment. Use UGAMart for purchasing parts and supplies following procurement procedures. Occasionally oversee unskilled or semi‑skilled workers. - Vessel Maintenance and Repair (10%):
General maintenance and repair services for small boats and trawling vessel, including removal of biological growth, painting, and motor repair. - Additional Duties (5%):
All UGAMI employees are expected to take on additional duties such as preparing meals for visitors, cleaning, landscaping, and supporting island‑wide events. Some weekend and night work as needed.
- Minimum:
High school diploma or equivalent. - Preferred:
General construction experience.
Extensive knowledge of general construction practices and facilities maintenance. Computer skills to include email, word processing, and general familiarity with the internet. Competent at maintaining and repairing large research and housing facilities, including marine vessels. Good people skills and working as part of a team.
Physical DemandsWork in a hot, humid climate; be tolerant of biting insects; lift 75 pounds.
Additional InformationFerry:
Must take a paid ferry to Sapelo Island every day; ferry departs at 8:30 am; missing the ferry means the work day is lost. Due to the schedule, rare evening and weekend responsibilities may apply.
Salary: commensurate with experience. Benefits: eligible for benefits package.
