The purpose of this job is to assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the plumbing and water distribution systems in unified government buildings. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing technical plumbing tasks, inspecting plumbing work, supervising inmate crews, and performing additional tasks as assigned.
Job Related RequirementsWORK SCHEDULE – Monday through Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm. May be required to work on religious holidays. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Must work cooperatively with others. When vehicle operation is required, the employee is responsible for the safety, readiness, and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC’s safe driving policy.
Minimum Training & Experience Required to Perform
Essential Job Functions:
Vocational or technical diploma in a related discipline with one year of plumbing experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
Six Months Of Supervisory Experience Is Preferred. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Criminal background must indicate eligibility for the supervision of inmates. Must obtain security training for the supervision of inmate workers, as set forth by the Georgia Department of Corrections Standard Operating Procedures, within six months of hire.
Essential Duties, Responsibilities- Supervise and recommend evaluations for assigned inmates, handling all inmate concerns, directing inmate work assignments, and recommending counseling and disciplining when necessary.
- Train, schedule, and supervise the inmate crew in the construction, maintenance, and repair of plumbing jobs.
- Perform technical plumbing tasks: adapt and implement blueprints and specifications according to plumbing codes, sketch plumbing layouts, determine materials required, order supplies, install fixtures and pipes, and repair or replace damaged pipes and fixtures.
- Perform preventive maintenance work on existing plumbing fixtures.
- Maintain related records and file reports pertaining to all plumbing activities.
- Install, test, and repair backflow prevention devices.
- Inspect plumbing to ensure code standards are met and maintain tools and equipment.
- Maintain an adequate inventory of parts and supplies.
- Respond to emergency service requests as a participant in the division’s on‑call program.
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Facilities Management Division of the Central Services Department as they pertain to the performance of duties for a Plumber I; knowledge of commercial, industrial, and institutional plumbing systems and apparatus; knowledge of HVAC, electrical, gas, plumbing, and building codes and regulations; knowledge of plumbing and electrical codes, blueprints, fixture specifications, and related records and charts;
and knowledge of the terminology used within the division and the plumbing trade.
Skill in using various plumbing and construction tools such as tractors and backhoes, pipe threading machines, torches, and other equipment; skill in standard practices, methods, materials, and tools of the plumbing trade; and skill in operating various plumbing, electrical, and construction tools and equipment.
Ability to diagnose and correct plumbing problems; supervise and train an inmate crew in construction, maintenance, and repair of plumbing; communicate effectively with supervisors, work crews, and other staff; use independent judgment in routine and non‑routine situations; perform required calculations; plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities; comprehend and apply division regulations and procedures; maintain records, reports, and information effectively.
