Position: Specialty Equipment Mechanic / Central Services

Position Summary

CDL Positions HIRING INCENTIVE (Effective 12.13.2022). Eligible newly hired candidates hired into a position requiring a CDL will receive incremental hiring incentives upon satisfactory job performance after completion of 3, 6, and 12 months of service.

Reports to:

Shop Foreman.

Incentives

Valid Driver’s License: $1,500 one‑time incentive paid in $500 increments (not added to base salary).

Class A or Class B CDL: $3,000 one‑time incentive paid in $1,000 increments (not added to base salary).

Continuation of this Recruitment/Hiring Incentive Program is subject to available funding and approval by the Manager.

Job Summary

The purpose of this job is to service, maintain, and repair various county vehicle and specialty equipment. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting in diagnosing and correcting mechanical problems with vehicles and equipment, performing preventive maintenance and repair on various specialty equipment, and performing additional tasks as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on vehicles and equipment; file repair reports with Shop Foreman.
  • Perform routine service duties such as relining brakes, tune‑ups, oil changes, filter replacements, chassis lubrication, antifreeze, air filter, drive belt, tire replacement, heating, and air‑conditioning repairs.
  • Perform general repairs; test and recharge/replace batteries; replace water pumps, fuel pumps, radiators, brake air lines, hydraulics, electrical wiring, headlights, and warning lights.
  • Maintain communications equipment.
  • Perform metal fabrication; fabricate high‑pressure hoses, fittings, and hydraulic hoses; conduct field repairs as needed.
  • Conduct welding on steel and aluminum; ensure repairs are made as required.
  • Rebuild air, water, and hydraulic valves.
  • Set up tools and equipment; procure parts and supplies for repairs; clean shop area, parts room, restrooms, and office.
  • Perform the duties of the Shop Foreman as needed in their absence.
  • Assist with development of guidelines of operation for new equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on bulldozers, graders, backhoes, tractors, boom trucks, dump trucks, and front‑ and rear‑loading refuse trucks.
  • Perform corrective maintenance procedures, including transmissions, hydraulic and electrical systems, and various degrees of engine repair.
  • Perform a variety of engine diagnosis procedures.
  • Operate service trucks and on‑board equipment.
  • Complete and sign work orders according to services rendered.
  • Prepare vehicle maintenance reports.
  • Weld and fabricate parts as needed.
  • Perform the duties of Automotive Mechanic as needed.
  • Oversee the work of inmates.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent with two years of automotive and heavy equipment/fleet maintenance and repair experience, including diesel and/or truck repair, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to obtain a Georgia Commercial Driver’s License within six months of date of hire.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain specialized training and/or certifications required of the position.
  • Criminal background must indicate eligibility for the supervision of inmates; must obtain security training for the supervision of inmate workers as set forth by the Georgia Department of Corrections Standard Operating Procedures within six months of date of hire or first available opportunity.

  • Ability to prepare, organize, and maintain records, reports, and information.
  • Effective communication with supervisors and staff.
  • Use of independent judgment in routine and non‑routine situations.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Knowledge of regulations and procedures of the Department.
