Hiring Incentive Program Effective 11/18/2025.

$3,000 HIRING INCENTIVE

A $3,000 one time hiring incentive, to be paid in $1,000 increments (not added to base salary). Eligible newly hired full time Plant Mechanics will receive an incremental hiring incentive upon satisfactory job performance after completion of 3 months of service; after completion of 6 months of service; and finally after completion of 12 months of employment for a total of $3,000.

Continuation of this Recruitment/Hiring Incentive Program is subject to available funding and approval by the Manager.

REPORTS TO: Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

CLASSIFICATION: Personnel System
- Requires satisfactory completion of a six month probationary period.

PAY GRADE: 112

SAFETY SENSITIVE: Yes, Subject to random drug testing per the Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.

Purpose of Job

The purpose of this job is to perform mechanical/specialty work functions associated with the operation and maintenance of water reclamation systems, maintenance and repair of water treatment plant systems, electrical, electronic, and mechanical equipment. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: maintaining records, repairing, maintaining and operating pumps, wells and motors; performing preventive maintenance and manual work activities; performing carpentry, welding, plumbing and concrete finishing tasks;

and performing additional tasks as assigned.

Job Related Requirements

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday
- Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, may require some after hour and weekend work occasionally.

May be required to work on religious holidays.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Must work cooperatively with others.

When vehicle operation is included, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.

High school diploma or equivalent, with one or more years of experience in Mechanics, Pump Maintenance, Water Reclamation Systems, water treatment systems maintenance, wastewater systems maintenance, mechanical operations/maintenance or related experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

Must possess a valid driver's license.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintains raw water/wastewater treatment equipment including circular and rectangular clarifiers, water basins, filters and Hypo-Chlorite generators to ensure proper operation; maintains lift stations.
  • Performs preventive maintenance activities such as cleaning and greasing pumps, cleaning wet wells, and changing filters.
  • Repairs, rebuilds, or replaces motors, pumps, gear boxes, drive shafts, coupling, and belts.
  • Checks pumps, gauges, backflow devices, clears wells and motors to ensure proper operation.
  • Assists in repairing and troubleshooting electronic low voltage circuitry.
  • Maintains records on pumps, wells and motors.
  • Handles liquid and dry chemicals; handles hazardous chemicals.
  • Maintains inventory of parts and supplies.
  • Performs building and grounds maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Operates light duty equipment (example: forklift).
  • Operates and handles general maintenance hand tools.
  • Assists in annual inventory reporting and record keeping.
  • Operates City Works to keep track of preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Responds to routine requests for information from employees and members of the staff.
  • Prepares and/or receives various forms, reports or other documents; processes and forwards as appropriate.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages and/or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Public Utilities Department as they pertain to the performance of duties.

Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.

Knowledge of lift station pumping operations, raw water/ water reclamation systems, and of general mechanical operations.
