About The College/Unit/Department: In 2018, the UGA Tifton Campus began a Centennial celebration. The Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at the University of Georgia – Tifton Campus (Bugwood) develops, maintains and hosts web, smartphone, and database applications related to invasive species and ecosystem health.

Position Summary

This position is part of the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at the UGA – Tifton Campus (Bugwood). The incumbent will work with center staff, federal and state agencies, and other stakeholders to maintain and develop Bugwood digital resources and will serve a leading role in web application development. A working knowledge of programming languages such as NodeJS, Cold Fusion, Python and JavaScript is required.

Familiarity with front-end frameworks such as React or Svelte is a plus. The role focuses on creating web applications that enable efficient interaction with data.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Programming languages:
    JavaScript, CSS, HTML, NodeJS, Python, Cold Fusion
  • Front-end frameworks:
    React, Svelte, Angular, Bootstrap
  • Testing, environment-aware configuration and development
  • Effective written and verbal communication and organizational skills
  • Documentation of source code
  • Ability to learn additional languages, systems, and tools as needed
Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field with sufficient experience to show competence and innovation in application development.
  • Experience in developing web applications for forestry, agriculture and/or natural resources.
Duties and Responsibilities

Develop new web applications and maintain existing applications

  • Maintain web applications
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy new web applications
  • Implement both front-end and back-end functionalities
  • Follow best practices
  • Document source code
  • Gather user requirements for requested features and improvements
  • Resolve applications’ bugs, issues, and defects
  • Optimize and improve application performance

Percentage of Time: 60%

Quality Control

  • Test applications for functionality and data security issues; document findings
  • Investigate and resolve bugs/issues for new and existing applications; document progress

Percentage of Time: 20%

Project Planning/Research and Development

  • Research, test, and learn new software development tools and frameworks
  • Interpret website functionality requirements from client descriptions
  • Provide estimates of development time to project managers
  • Document proposed architecture/code for new projects and features

Percentage of Time: 10%
