Description of Work
This position functions as a Level 2 Transportation Worker within the Forsyth County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of manual and equipment operational tasks in the maintenance of highways. Responsibilities include operating a range of highway equipment such as a patch truck, dump truck, sweeper, roller, and skid‑steer; installing traffic control devices and temporary erosion control devices; flagging traffic; crack sealing;
asphalt patching; installing pipe culverts; operating hand and power tools; monitoring tasks performed by inmates; clearing right of way; and responding to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, traffic control cleanup, etc. Work may occur during normal business hours, emergency call situations, or scheduled night duties.
Additional expectations: must be physically able to stand, walk, talk, and hear; effectively communicate in English; endure extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, heat, cold, heavy construction equipment, and high traffic volumes; and wear safety‑toed shoes. The position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work details, requiring a valid inmate card issued by the NC Department of Public Safety.
Candidates must undergo a criminal history check, complete training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.
Must possess or be able to obtain a North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement within 360 days of hire. Pre‑employment drug testing and background checks will be required. A release form and background statement must be signed to allow NCDOT to verify employment history and controlled substance testing with previous employers. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of the NCDOT post‑offer evaluation.
- Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
- Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
- Experience operating at least two of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front‑end loader, forklift, force‑feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavator, skid‑steer, or sweeper.
- Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance, or asphalt patching.
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
High school diploma or GED and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicants may qualify through education, experience, or a combination of both following the state’s Equivalency Guide.
Special RequirementsEither possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, or acquisition of the required license through on‑the‑job training and compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations within 360 days of hire.
SalaryGrade: NC05
Salary Range: $33,902 – $59,327
