Peer Tutor/Peer-Assisted Learning Leader/Undergraduate Writing Commons Tutor

Business Title
- Peer Tutor/Peer-Assisted Learning Leader/Undergraduate Writing Commons Tutor

Department Summary
- Academic Achievement Center Peer Tutors, Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) Leaders, and Undergraduate Writing Commons Tutors provide learning support to undergraduate students in one-hour sessions. Peer Tutors meet with students in online Teams meetings and in-person at various locations on the Athens and regional campuses. Tutors engage students in learning activities such as discussing class material and test questions, offering information about learning strategies, and fostering a positive learning environment.

PAL Leaders facilitate weekly review sessions for students taking historically difficult courses. During PAL sessions, PAL Leaders facilitate discussion of important course concepts, help students develop strategies for studying, and teach participants how to become independent learners. In addition to facilitating weekly review sessions, PAL Leader responsibilities include attending class, communicating with the professor, and planning review sessions. Writing Tutors also work collaboratively with students throughout the writing process by discussing academic or non-academic writing projects, developing ideas, organizing and revising drafts, and strengthening clarity and organization.

Rather than editing or proofreading papers, Writing Tutors help students develop effective writing strategies, become more confident writers, and build the skills needed to write independently.

Responsibilities:
Complete the required 10 hours of paid training. Attend all scheduled tutoring or PAL sessions. Be punctual, begin all sessions promptly, use time for academic tasks, and focus on the student's needs. Create a positive learning environment and encourage independent learning by helping students identify problem areas and giving them opportunities to practice and build knowledge. Maintain confidentiality as outlined in the FERPA compliance statement.

Keep up-to-date with appointments using the Trac Cloud scheduling software. Check email and Teams to remain informed of activity at the AAC. Submit accurate time sheets and enter hours in Workforce in a timely manner.
