Benefits Specialist
The benefits specialist is responsible for assisting with the administration of all benefits and retirement programs, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, and 401(k) plan.
Pay range: $56,208.17-$64,565.51 based on experience, education, and/or licensure.
Essential Functions- Ensures the accuracy of all benefits enrollments in the HRIS to provide vendors with accurate eligibility information.
- Assists with new‑hire orientations.
- Performs quality checks of benefits‑related data.
- Assists employees regarding benefits claim issues and plan changes.
- Distributes all benefits enrollment materials and determines eligibility.
- Enrolls employees with carriers and processes life status changes.
- Responds to benefits inquiries from managers and employees on plan provisions, benefits enrollments, status changes, and other general inquiries.
- Processes and administers all leave‑of‑absence requests and disability paperwork: medical, personal, disability and FMLA & BWC.
- Effectively interprets FMLA and ADA implications as they relate to leaves of absences/disabilities.
- Responds to 401(k) inquiries from managers and employees relating to enrollments, plan changes and contribution amounts. Manages the annual catch‑up contribution enrollment.
- Assists with the open enrollment process.
- Administers the tuition reimbursement & CEU programs.
- Administers the vehicle lease program.
- Provides necessary reports for allocation/billing charges.
- Monthly reconciliation of benefit invoices.
- Travel within designated service area.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school degree or GED equivalent is required.
- Bachelor's degree in human resources related fields is required.
- SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) certification credential preferred.
- 2-3 years' experience in benefits administration required.
- 1-2 years experience administering FMLA and other leave programs required.
Skills and Abilities
Required Skills / Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of employee benefits leave requirements and other legal protections afforded by the FMLA, ADA, and other applicable laws.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, required.
- Intermediate level Excel skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- A valid driver's license and the ability to operate a motor vehicle required.
- Appropriate level of auto insurance coverage required.
- Ability to manage deadlines within a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment.
- Ability to operate in an Internet‑based, automated office environment.
- Ability to maintain high‑speed internet connection.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer required.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times required.
