Ohio University is accepting applications to create an eligibility list for police officer positions that will be used to fill approved vacancies throughout the next year. New hires are eligible for a sign‑on bonus of $5,000.00.
Application RequirementsAll applicants must: apply to this posting, pass the written test (average score 70 or higher) administered online by the National Testing Network, and complete any required certification and fitness testing as described.
- OPOTA‑certified applicants will be invited to interview after passing the written test.
- Non‑OPOTA applicants will be scheduled for fitness testing on the Athens campus.
- Applicants who possess an OPOTA certificate may submit it by scan, fax, email, or US mail (see instructions).
- Applicants who applied to previous Police Officer Pool postings must re‑apply and retest; written test scores are valid for one year.
Under general supervision, patrol grounds and buildings to protect lives and property, prevent crimes, enforce laws, investigate crimes, carry firearms or make arrests, testify in court, and make police presentations to groups and organizations.
Minimum Qualifications- Must possess a current Ohio Police Officer Training Academy Certificate or obtain certification as directed.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Minimum age 21 and successfully complete written and physical fitness examinations.
- Finalists subject to psychological test, polygraph, and comprehensive background investigation.
- Basic skills in reading, writing, and math.
- Meet Occupational Health Medical standards for the position.
Prior law enforcement experience, advanced training, or other relevant qualifications are preferred.

Current pay for uncertified recruits while attending basic academy training is $23.76. Starting pay for certified officers ranges from $27.95 to $40.92, depending on education and experience.
