Position: SYSTEM WIDE NURSE

System-Wide School Nurse

The primary role is to enhance the educational process by promoting the health and well-being of school-age children and the school staff. System-wide nurses are responsible for carrying out nursing and other health related services, activities and tasks in accordance with nursing standards of practice and Board of Nursing Rules and Regulations. Assignments shall be within the scope of practice for the license achieved.

In performing the essential duties and responsibilities of the position, confidentiality must always be maintained.

Qualifications:

The System-Wide Nurse must be a licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Tennessee with a current copy of his/her license on file in the business office. Prefer minimum of three (3) years of experience in public or child health. Maintain CPR, First Aid, and all needed certifications. Valid Tennessee driver's license.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Program Management:
    Monitors and enforces student compliance with state immunization law. Organizes and maintains school health records. Coordinates the development and revision of health policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines to meet current standards. Submits reports in a timely fashion. Responsible to collect/compile Health Services Survey data from all schools and submit the Health Services Survey Report. Assists with the documentation required with child protection issues and suspected cases of child abuse according to state laws.

    Completes supply orders at schools, organizes and maintains adequate supplies. Supervises and administers the appropriate delivery of health care services for the student with special health needs, including the administration of medication and the performance of health care procedures as requested by the student's physician.
  • Student Management:
    Provides initial emergency and first aid services in the school for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances. Promotes wellness through health education. Screens students for handicaps which may interfere with the learning process. Provides health appraisal, health counseling, intervention, referral and follow-up for student health problems to promote wellness. Follows through on individual problems, working with students, teachers, family and other health care providers.

    Administers medications according to school policy. Assists school nurses with issues related to medication administration and manages storage and administration of medication by other school personnel. Provides necessary teaching of personal hygiene while encouraging the student to assume greater responsibility for their own health.
  • School/Community Relations:
    Projects a positive image to the community. Communicates appropriately with parents/guardians. Follows-up with messages and requests in a timely manner. Acts as a liaison with parents/guardians, private physicians, and community agencies. Works with other school agents, such as attendance workers, to communicate student affairs. Communicates effectively with students and staff. Involved in the kindergarten registration process. Provides necessary in-service training for faculty and staff.

    Alerts teachers and school administrators to health trends and problems. Provides health education literature and promotes staff wellness. Serves as a resource person to the classroom teacher in promoting health careers to students. Participates in student and community education. Coordinates with school staff to maintain a healthy school environment.
  • Professional Growth and Development:
    Maintains BLS/CPR certification. Attends staff meetings, education programs, seminars, workshops and other professional growth activities to maintain and update professional knowledge, expertise, and clinical skills. Disseminates ideas and information to other professionals; provides leadership in addressing the challenges facing the profession. Conducts oneself in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner. Demonstrates skills in planning, organizing, and implementing the school health service program.
