Accounting Manager (Hands-On Role)

Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Accounting Manager to join a dynamic public sector finance team. This role is hands-on and requires strong technical accounting abilities, team leadership skills, and a deep understanding of governmental accounting practices.
Key Responsibilities:

General Accounting

• Prepare, review, and post journal entries in compliance with accounting standards
• Perform monthly trial balance reviews and resolve discrepancies
• Reconcile general ledger and sub-ledger accounts

Financial Analysis & Reporting

• Analyze financial data for trends, variances, and risk assessment
• Prepare and present scheduled and ad hoc financial reports

Audit & Compliance

• Prepare audit schedules and respond to audit inquiries
• Ensure compliance with GASB and relevant governmental accounting regulations
• Maintain internal controls and support policy development

Reconciliations

• Lead reconciliations for key accounts (grants, payroll, fixed assets, CIP)
• Ensure journal entries are complete, accurate, and well-documented

Team Leadership

• Supervise and mentor accounting staff
• Oversee daily workflows to ensure timely, accurate task completion

Process Improvement

• Identify inefficiencies and implement accounting best practices
• Collaborate with internal departments to improve financial processes

Other Duties

• Provide guidance on technical accounting matters
• Assist with special analyses and document standard operating procedures

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 10+ years of accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role
• Strong understanding of governmental accounting and grant management
• Experience with audit preparation, reconciliations, and financial analysis

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Accounting or Finance
• CPA or CGFM certification
• Public accounting or municipal finance experience

Technical Skills:

• Proficiency in ERP systems (Oracle highly preferred)
• Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis)

Soft Skills:

• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Proactive, organized, and committed to continuous improvement
