ACCOUNTANT I (General Accounting)
Accountant I (General Accounting) is an unclassified position in the Department of Finance, Division:
General Accounting, Fulton County Government.
- Bachelor's Degree in accounting or a related field.
- Supplemented by two years of experience in performing government accounting duties, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Proficiency in performing the essential functions of the role and the ability to learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively.
The examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience ascertained from the application. The applicant must document that they possess the minimum knowledge, skills, education, and experience listed here. If selected, an official, accredited college transcript will be required at the time of employment for all degrees and coursework used to qualify for this position.
Key Responsibilities- Preparing account reconciliations (reconciling high-volume accounts).
- Analyzing general ledger accounts.
- Processing journal entries.
- Analyzing account variances and recording adjusting journal entries.
- Preparing financial reports and accounting schedules.
- Assisting with year‑end closeout.
- Maintaining thorough knowledge of accounting principles.
This classification is for performing accounting duties requiring independent judgment, including reconciling accounts, monitoring account budget status, completing transactional and informational reports, and performing administrative duties. It is distinguished from Accountant II in that it performs general accounting duties and has responsibility for reconciling and monitoring accounts, whereas Accountant II additionally prepares financial reports covering substantial county resources.
Essential Functions- Performs professional accounting duties independently.
- Posts adjustment entries and reconciles accounts; monitors budget status of accounts; reviews submitted accounting documents; and posts adjustments or forwards errors/misstatements to applicable parties for resolution.
- Reconciles bank statements, balance‑sheet activity statements, and researches dishonored checks; prepares and sends correspondence to resolve outstanding items.
- Interprets court documents and makes appropriate adjustments and entries.
- Assists with contract/grant administration procedures, including budgeting and variance analysis.
- Researches information for customers and external auditors.
- Processes documentation associated with department/division operations within stipulated timelines.
- Prepares or completes various forms, reports, and correspondence such as reconciliation reports, reimbursement requests, receipts, grant reports, and financial analysis.
- Provides lead direction to accounting or financial support staff as required.
- Maintains current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, principles, and practices related to government accounting, financial reporting, and grant accounting administration; participates in professional development and may provide related training and guidance to staff.
Performs other related duties as required.
