Summer Program Counselor [Therapeutics Counselor]
Join the City of Atlanta’s Parks & Recreation team as a Summer Program Counselor for the Therapeutics Counselor role. This seasonal position helps oversight of youth with mild to moderate disabilities across seven weeks of summer camp.
Job DescriptionThe role involves supervising youth ages 6–18, facilitating educational and enrichment activities, and ensuring a safe, inclusive environment. Tasks include monitoring camp operations, planning and implementing activities, maintaining facilities, conducting emergency procedures, and attending meetings. Applicants must be at least 19 years old, possess a high school diploma or GED, have relevant experience, and pass background and drug screenings.
Responsibilities- Serve as group counselor during activity periods, assisting with monitoring, feeding, and group transitions.
- Supervise campers in activities and daily operations.
- Use strong interpersonal skills with staff, parents, and visitors.
- Attend scheduled meetings and record attendance.
- Assist campers with restroom breaks and changing as needed.
- Identify and meet daily camper needs.
- Plan and implement educational, recreational, and social enrichment activities.
- Familiarize with lesson plans and adapt activities accordingly.
- Participate in program meetings designated by the supervisor.
- Minimum age: 19 years old.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Education professional with experience in Physical, Special, or Adapted Education, or a college student majoring in related fields.
- One year of experience working with youth with special needs or three consecutive summers.
- Pass background check for criminal and child protective findings.
- Pass a drug screening.
- City of Atlanta required training:
June 1–5, 2026. - Work schedule:
8‑hour shifts, Monday–Friday, June 8–July 24, 2026; hours 7:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m.; vacation requests not approved during this period. - All staff must be actively involved with campers during swim times and wear a bathing suit (one‑piece for females, swimming trunks with lining for males). Staff are not required to know how to swim or teach lessons.
