General Description and Classification StandardsThe purpose of this job is to review construction plans to ensure compliance with regulatory codes, ordinances, and laws. Duties include but are not limited to approving building plans and specifications; assisting architects and developers with building code conformation; answering inquiries regarding construction materials and procedures; explaining departmental procedures; and processing paperwork.
Supervision ReceivedWork independently or in teams, reporting to the Assistant Director.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Approve building plans and specifications that comply with city codes and regulations regarding structural adequacy, life safety, and fire emergency exit configuration.
- Assist a high volume of architects, engineers, developers, and customers in conformity with building code regulations.
- Provide services at a public counter to answer questions and approve plans.
- Answer inquiries regarding construction materials and procedures.
- Explain departmental procedures to customers in order to facilitate permit issuance.
- Direct customers to appropriate divisions for requested services.
- Maintain accurate records, files of plans, plan review status, and work performed.
- Offer suggestions and participate as a member of a work team.
- Evaluate and approve building plans and specifications that comply with city codes and regulations regarding zoning, structural adequacy, life safety, and fire emergency exit configuration.
- Research projects and gather information from architectural and engineering manuals, building and life safety codes, and governmental regulations.
- Confere with architects and engineers to acquire information necessary to assess the building.
- Assist architects, engineers, developers, homeowners, and the public in voluntary conformity to building code regulations.
- Answer inquiries from customers in the office and over the telephone regarding construction methods, procedures, and materials used.
- Explain departmental procedures to customers to facilitate permit issuance.
- Direct customers to appropriate divisions for requested services.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Prepare periodic updates in the City’s database regarding plan review and other issues.
- Communicate with supervisor, inspectors, contractors, the public, and others regarding code interpretations and related issues.
- Study, interpret, and ensure Building codes are adhered to in building designs.
Follow standardized procedures, building code regulations, and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks. Apply organizational policies and codes.
Leadership ProvidedProvide guidance and training as required to lower-level, interns, temporary employees, etc.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of established building and construction codes and regulations.
- Knowledge of building construction procedures and methods as required in the performance of duties.
- Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
- Ability to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain an assortment of records, reports, and information.
- Ability to communicate with supervisors and other staff members.
- Ability to use independent judgment.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations required by the job.
- Ability to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques required by the job.
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
- Ability to comprehend and apply regulations and procedures of the department.
- Ability to work under a minimum degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention to detail and tight deadlines.
– Education and Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Architectural or Structural Engineering, Building Construction, or related field is required.
• Three (3) years of building, plumbing, inspection, code compliance, or related experience, and one (1) year of residential or commercial plan review experience are required.
• Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job will be considered.
Preferred Education & Experience• Experienced with code compliance and plan review processes.
Licenses and Certifications- Required:
Valid Georgia Driver’s License. - All Candidates must obtain ICC Licensure within 8 months of employment.
