The Sr. Project Estimator (Heavy Civil) is responsible for leading and executing the full-cycle pre-construction phase, focusing on preparing complete, accurate, and competitive hard bid estimates for complex, high-value heavy civil projects.
This role requires specialized analysis for scopes including deep foundations, heavy utility and deep excavation, pump stations, wastewater treatment plants, and complex underground construction.
KeyDuties & Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation of accurate, timely, and complete hard bid estimates for complex heavy civil projects, ensuring all scope is covered.
- Conduct detailed quantity take-offs, focusing heavily on deep excavations, shoring, structural elements, and heavy utility installations.
- Interpret and analyze complex geo-technical reports and LiDAR data to accurately determine excavation classifications (e.g., rock types), methods, and associated costs.
- Read, interpret, and cross-reference civil, structural, and pipe drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Analyze costs associated with equipment, materials, labor, subcontracts, and general conditions.
- Utilize AGTEK Construction Estimating Software proficiently for earthwork analysis and quantity take-offs.
- Employ Bluebeam for document review, annotation, and measurement verification.
- Prepare detailed cost models and bid summaries using advanced Excel formulas and functions.
- Maintain accurate records of all project data, bids, quotes, and documentation throughout the pre-construction phase.
- Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate competitive proposals from subcontractors and vendors.
- Collaborate to ensure constructability is integrated into the estimate and to facilitate a smooth project turnover.
- Visit potential job sites (pre- and post-bid) to assess existing conditions, logistics, and scope verification.
- Maintain a deadline-driven approach, ensuring all required project deliverables are submitted on time.
- 7-10+ years of direct experience estimating projects within the similar or direct scope of heavy civil work (deep excavation, shoring, heavy utility, WWTP, deep foundations).
- Prior experience or strong understanding of the scope and challenges within a Project Manager role is highly valued.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a similar field is preferred.
- Strong proficiency using AGTEK, Bluebeam, and within Microsoft Excel (formulas and functions).
- Strong knowledge/understanding of deep excavations, heavy utility systems, shoring techniques, and heavy civil structural construction principles.
- Proven ability to read and interpret detailed civil, structural, and pipe drawings/specifications.
- Proven experience interpreting and analyzing geo-technical reports, including assessing rock formations, excavation conditions, and LiDAR reports.
- Possess a self-motivated, deadline-driven work ethic and a clear leadership mentality.
- Must be willing to work in-office full-time in either the Smyrna or Savannah location. This is not a remote or hybrid role.
