Join to apply for the Digital Meteorologist, CNN Weather role at CNN
This role is for a strong meteorologist and self‑describing weather nerd to represent CNN Weather on digital platforms and its new mobile product. You’ll deliver real‑time forecasts and nowcasts, help create on‑demand videos, and work with the team to produce daily forecasts and write sharp, accurate stories.
The ideal candidate is a strong writer who thrives in the breaking news environment, can deliver level‑headed expertise in weather and climate science, and knows how to engage audiences on digital platforms. This person will join one of CNN’s most innovative multi‑platform teams, working directly with other meteorologists and climate experts to forecast, analyze and explain weather events, including hurricanes, blizzards, tornado outbreaks and geomagnetic storms.
The candidate should be fascinated by the natural world, thrive in a fast‑paced news environment and have their finger on the pulse of emerging trends. They must embody the CNN Climate & Weather team’s ethos — team‑oriented collaboration, valuing diversity, elevating colleagues and enjoying cross‑team work with reporters, producers and product developers.
- Collaborate with the team as a meteorologist in the execution of live coverage during hurricanes, tornado outbreaks, severe ice storms, life‑threatening floods and more
- Report and write urgent, live updating digital coverage for CNN’s digital platforms in extreme weather situations
- Support live streams for CNN Weather on our mobile platform, working with video meteorologists to help our audience understand extreme weather
- Pitch and script video‑on‑demand packages — from quick hits on the weather of the day to deeper explainers
- Participate in live Q&A, incorporate audience questions into our coverage and adapt in the moment as conditions change
- Partner with video producers/editors and motion graphics to build compelling, data‑rich visuals that help audiences understand risk and impact
- Shape secondary story ideas and angles around the weather story of the moment, e.g., expanding drought in the American West; deadly "monsoon on steroids" in South Asia; glacier outburst flooding in Alaska
- File clean, crisp copy on the first draft and be comfortable switching between quick updates and high‑concept enterprise as news demands
- A degree in meteorology
- At least three years of digital editorial experience
- Experience covering fast‑moving weather on a public‑facing platform
- Understanding of latest digital video trends, including how to capture, captivate and hold an audience
- A collaborative, team‑oriented attitude
- Ability to frame stories for national and global audiences
- Eagerness to work outside the regular 9 to 5 during major weather events
- Proven ability to translate complex science concepts
- Ability to write briefly and breezily
- Strong pitching and headline instincts
- Exceptional communication and organizational skills
