OverviewThe Technical Leader is a Licensed Architect and Detention Specialist, accountable for the team’s adherence to Company QA/QC procedures and documentation standards, ensuring a high level of technical proficiency and quality. As part of the office management team (and firm-wide technical team), this role serves as the resident technical expert infusing technical excellence into the office culture. Mentors teams in document control practices to maintain superior quality in construction document content, development, and coordination in conjunction with recommendations made by firm technical committees.
Establishes local and/or firm-wide best technical practices, QA/QC processes, and document standards. Inspires innovative use of systems, products and technology through the introduction of new products, systems, and technologies. The Technical Leader may contribute to staffing decisions and performance, and has the ability to seal construction documents. Experience in Civic & Justice building typologies is strongly preferred, including projects such as Correctional facilities, Detention Centers, and Courthouses.
Other preferred experience includes municipalities, police and fire stations, city and county buildings, and other public works/public safety buildings.
- Lead and manage QA/QC procedures consistent with Company protocols and Project Process requirements.
- Provide QA/QC reviews on larger projects and establish goals and expectations that lead to high-quality construction documents.
- Lead risk management through the office QA/QC process and document control processes.
- Oversee space planning and construction document reviews for building code and ADA compliance as required.
- Review building and accessibility code reviews completed by teams or train teams as needed.
- Assist teams in working with local jurisdictions to address permit review comments and code interpretations.
- Review and comment on client contracts as requested.
- Promote diversity and inclusion within the workforce and environment.
- Communicate effectively in written and verbal form; organize and prioritize tasks to meet time frames.
- Lead initiatives that strengthen culture, knowledge base, and capabilities; foster talent development and a positive studio environment.
- Provide opportunities to utilize individual strengths for professional development and team performance; deliver feedback to inspire continuous learning.
- Lead learning programs during meetings to educate project teams on QA/QC practices, design issues, or trends.
- Review and contribute to project proposal plans for appropriateness of team, deliverables, and project phase durations against the proposed fee.
- Meet weekly with project leads to ensure work progresses as scheduled.
- Provide direction to resolve project-related issues or interpersonal conflicts.
- Evaluate teams’ skills and provide staffing recommendations to Practice Leadership.
- Participate in staffing processes and conduct interviews with Practice Leadership.
- Be knowledgeable about projects within the teams.
- Update and maintain NELSON QA/QC Standards for quality and timely delivery; support implementation of these standards.
- Ensure project leads follow NELSON protocol for QA/QC.
- Review proposed story boards for efficient approaches to meeting deliverables and schedule.
- Oversee assembly of construction documents (drawings and specifications) for each project phase.
- Raise awareness of risks affecting project success and review with project manager and leadership team.
- Review documentation for technical quality control at multiple times across projects.
- Provide technical guidance on design details, documentation levels, and constructability.
- Assist project teams in evaluating new construction systems/materials for appropriate applications and potential liability.
- Guide project leads in utilizing all NELSON resources to deliver quality technical and/or creative design.
- Support local/regional project teams and share best practices within the studio.
- Prioritize deadlines, delegate tasks, and provide high-quality service to clients.
- Review and approve completed Revit details and assemblies for library use by other teams.
- Occasionally conduct site visits to observe detailing issues and share findings as learning experiences.
- Provide guidance during Construction Administration on appropriate RFI responses and submittal reviews.
- Review project budgets and mentor teammates to follow them; train teammates to prepare budgets independently.
- Manage projects of significant scope to support workload and utilization targets.
- Provide budget/proposal support including additional services and reallocations to assist project managers on profitability.
