SummaryThe Section Chief is responsible for maintaining all operations and direct reports within Hematology Oncology.
QualificationsTo qualify, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional criteria listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA physicians that met previous qualification standards at initial appointment are deemed to have met basic requirements.
Basic Requirements- United States Citizenship:
Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. - Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from an approved VA school.
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
- Residency Training: completion of a residency approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty leading to board certification eligibility (ACGME, AOA, or other U.S. residency with at least five years of verified U.S. practice).
- For residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA programs who meet basic requirements, appointment as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) may be possible under limited scope.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Preferred Experience:
Hematology/Oncology. - Physical Requirements:
Light lifting and carrying under 15 lb, standing, walking, bending, and vision/hearing criteria as specified; ability to use N‑95 mask or PAPR.
- Provide direct supervision for Hematology/Oncology and all clinical providers within the section.
- Serve as point of contact for physicians and clinical staff assigned to the department.
- Collaborate with staff and physicians to optimize clinical systems through education, training, quality, and outcomes initiatives.
- Liaise between clinical staff, IT, and other departments and services.
- Lead participation in projects, committees, and teams to meet organizational needs.
- Provide inpatient and outpatient consultative services, perform Hematology/Oncology procedures, triage consults, and respond to secure messages and phone calls.
- Serve as attending of record for patients in the medical intensive care unit and perform critical‑care procedures.
- Supervise trainees in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Maintain up‑to‑date licensure, board certification, and VA training requirements.
- Work schedule:
Monday‑Friday 8:00 AM–4:30 PM (subject to change).
