Server Engineer - IT Operations

Position Purpose

This position is responsible for remotely monitoring, troubleshooting, & performing preventive maintenance on the Department of Aviation physical and virtual servers. The Windows Systems Engineer’s role is to design, install, administer, and optimize Microsoft Windows servers and related components to achieve and maintain high performance of business applications. This includes ensuring the availability of client/server applications, configuring new implementations, and developing processes and procedures for ongoing management of the server environment.

This position shares responsibility for the security, integrity, and safety of the data center/server farm. Scope of responsibilities includes server hardware, Windows Server operating systems, core Microsoft back-office technologies, and 3rd party infrastructure software and applications.

• Fully support, configure, maintain, and upgrade physical and virtual servers at the Department of Aviation
• Keep an eye out for needed updates
• Troubleshoot and evaluate server connectivity issues
• Monitor server performance (availability, utilization, throughput, and latency) and test for weaknesses
• Resolve problems reported by end users
• Define network policies and procedures
• Research and make recommendations on the Department of Aviation’s server infrastructure
• Stay current on all technology platforms and systems to ensure the users get the requirement functionality to perform their job.
• Respond, resolve, or ensure issues are resolved when assigned to me by the Service Desk
• Write technical and end-user documentation for assigned projects
• Provide all necessary system, maintenance, and disaster recovery plan documents.
• Perform system installation support and ensure all necessary system security requirements.
• Responsible for researching and problem resolution and must coordinate activities with IT support staff as required and document findings.
• Maintain software licenses and maintenance support from software vendors
• Follow division team handbook, policies and procedures, software standards, software development lifecycle and change management
• Work collaboratively with others to achieve team and organizational goals; prioritize projects and/or tasks; provide constructive input to achieve team goals
• Deliver a customer-focused, responsive service to customers; support efforts to enhance business efficiency and effectiveness; demonstrate a positive, can-do attitude; respond constructively to new information, changing conditions, and unexpected obstacles
• Prepare management reports related to system audit, availability and performance as needed.
• Submit appropriate change order documentation for moves, adds, and changes of the systems
• Serves as a technical resource or mentor to other employees. May lead or instruct less experienced workers in high level or technical jobs.
• May give presentations to upper management on upgrades and server improvements and findings.

• Knowledge of concepts processes and tools utilized in the operation of a Network Operations center.
• Experience with proactively ensuring networks, server & environmental infrastructure is available & secure
• Strong Microsoft Office and telecommunications software skills.
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Ability to apply experience and professional knowledge to carry out assignments in professional area. Ability to apply knowledge across organization or discipline lines.
• Good oral and written communication skills. Good technical writing, people skills and customer service skills.
• Thorough knowledge & understanding of Server infrastructure and OS
• Familiar with Windows Domain, Active Directory, DNS, Telnet, DHCP, FTP, SSL
• Hands-on VMware skills
• Active Directory
• Microsoft Exchange and Office 365 environments

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering or related field (Equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis). 5 years of server experience.
