Substation Senior Structural Engineer

HDR offers an exciting opportunity for a Substation Senior Structural Engineer to join our nationally ranked Power Delivery team. You will lead the structural design of high‑voltage switchyards and substations up to 500kV, working closely with Project Managers and multidisciplinary teams across multiple offices to deliver reliable, resilient, and sustainable power systems.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, oversee, review, and/or execute structural design tasks for substation steel members (rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, folded plate tubular steel shapes) – including detailed design, calculations, detailing, and fabrication documentation.
  • Lead, oversee, review, and/or execute foundation design tasks (drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, etc.) using industry‑standard software.
  • Support substation layout designs, plans, elevations/sections, details, and associated bills of materials.
  • Prepare and review construction and material specifications.
  • Assign project tasks and provide technical guidance to project team members.
  • Conduct quality checks and reviews of project deliverables per HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements, and review work from other teams as needed.
  • Collaborate with transmission line civil/structural engineers to share resources and cross‑train.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to develop and maintain standards.
  • Mentor and supervise Project Engineers, EITs, or CADD/Designers; lead multiple projects concurrently across different locations.
  • Participate in project reviews and assist in developing technical papers and presentations for industry events.
  • Travel may be required.
Preferred / Desired Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
  • Structural Engineer (SE) license or ability to obtain; SE license in Hawaii and California is a plus.
  • Experience designing high‑voltage switchyards/substations up to 500kV.
  • Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113, AISC‑360, ASCE‑7, ACI‑318 and related standards.
  • Proficiency in design software such as PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile or equivalents.
  • Previous consulting firm experience.
  • Minimum ten years of technical design experience in high‑voltage projects, including foundation and steel structural design.
  • Track record of cooperative teamwork with diverse, regional, and technical managers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self‑starter with strong conceptual, organizational, problem‑solving, and collaboration abilities.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Minimum ten years of structural engineering experience related to building design.
  • Professional Engineering license recognized in the location of the position offered.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar analytical software.
  • Experience in design calculations and layouts.
  • Ability to design and detail in steel, concrete, masonry, and wood; understanding of gravity and lateral analysis.
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or consulting firm.

Salary Range

Targeted salary range: $132,107 – $204,500, dependent on skills, experience, education, and location.
