Research Engineer I
Location:
Atlanta, Georgia
Georgia Tech is a leading public research university, and the Institute for Matter and Systems (IMS) provides cleanroom and nanofabrication facilities. The Research Engineer I is an independent, hands‑on engineer responsible for operating cleanroom fabrication tools and executing established micro‑ and nano‑fabrication processes.
Responsibilities- Operate cleanroom tools across lithography, deposition, etching, wet processing, plating, dicing, wire bonding, and packaging.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks, baseline checks, and basic calibrations on assigned equipment.
- Identify, diagnose, and resolve common tool or process issues; escalated when needed.
- Prepare and handle wafers/samples, follow established process flows, and ensure process consistency.
- Document process parameters, results, and any deviations in a clear and organized manner.
- Maintain accurate tool logs, safety records, and up‑to‑date SOPs.
- Ensure users follow cleanroom protocols, proper tool operation, and safety requirements.
- Maintain clean, organized work spaces and ensure chemical handling and waste procedures are followed.
- Participate in equipment qualifications, process verifications, and periodic training or outreach activities.
- Suggest improvements to workflows, documentation, safety practices, or process reliability.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, or related field (M.S. preferred).
- Foundational knowledge of semiconductor or micro/nano‑fabrication processes.
- Ability to independently operate complex laboratory equipment.
- Strong documentation, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
- Commitment to cleanroom safety and high‑precision work.
- Hands‑on experience in a cleanroom or microfabrication setting.
- Familiarity with photolithography, deposition, etching, metrology, plating, dicing, wire bonding, or packaging processes.
- Experience writing SOPs, process documentation, or technical notes.
