The Safety Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and providing support to most aspects of the safety programs within the company. They prepare and schedule training on emergency procedures, workplace safety, hazards, and other safety‑related topics. The coordinator must be fluent in Spanish and English, with exceptional written and verbal communication skills in both languages. They ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations, develop and implement safety policies and procedures, conduct regular inspections, and provide training and guidance to employees.

The coordinator promotes a culture of safety throughout the organization and works closely with project managers, supervisors, and other team members to create a safe working environment. Experience in heavy civil construction, including roadway and highway work, is required; airport work is a plus.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in implementing health and safety initiatives.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections.
  • Help ensure adherence to local, state, and federal safety regulations.
  • Develop and conduct training programs on safety topics.
  • Aid in incident investigations and suggest preventive measures.
  • Collect and maintain records of incidents and accidents and produce statistics for company leadership.
  • Work closely with Operations and HR to manage Workers’ Compensation claims, vehicle‑related incidents, and property damage.
  • Assist in evaluating claims for potential financial impact.
  • Promote proper utilization of safety equipment and PPE.
  • Assist with risk assessments, including Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
  • Conduct weekly toolbox talks with crews at job sites.
  • Contribute to the development of emergency response protocols and drills.
  • Assist in organizing and preparing documentation for OCIP or CCIP programs.
  • Prepare job‑specific safety plans with the operations team.
  • Support communication with occupational physicians and medical professionals.
  • Collaborate with operations to monitor safety compliance and identify concerns.
  • Report to the company’s safety committee and participate in workplace safety committees.
  • Maintain safety files and records.
  • Help procure safety equipment and supplies.
  • Stay informed about safety best practices, technology, and regulations.
  • Coordinate equipment safety training with manufacturers.
  • Support new employee safety orientations.
  • Interact with third‑party auditors and regulatory inspectors under supervision.
  • Review and provide input on subcontractors’ safety plans and requirements.
  • Assist in evaluating subcontractors’ safety compliance.
  • Conduct subcontractor safety training sessions.
  • Support assessment of subcontractors’ safety qualifications.
  • Ensure proper storage of hazardous materials.
  • Prepare and oversee traffic control plans.
  • Collaborate with HR to implement office safety and employee wellness programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements

This position may require site visits and inspections involving walking, climbing, and navigating uneven terrain. It may also involve lifting and carrying safety equipment, documents, or other materials. The role is subject to adverse outdoor conditions, including extreme cold and heat, and may involve noise levels that require shouting for communication. Exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mist, and gases is possible.

Office responsibilities include developing safety programs, analyzing data, preparing reports, conducting training sessions, and communicating with project managers and team members. The office location may vary with company needs.

Travel Requirements

The Safety Coordinator may need to travel regularly between different project sites, including commuting or overnight stays for inspections or meetings.
