Vice President, Mechanical Engineering – Atlanta, GA – WSP

WSP is initiating a search to fill the Vice President, Mechanical Engineering position at its Atlanta office to launch the Healthcare Design Practice. This role is for a licensed Mechanical Engineer with extensive healthcare design experience on the East Coast, combining technical leadership and business development to grow our Property and Buildings business in Atlanta.

Key responsibilities include active participation in the full project cycle for complex healthcare, pharmaceutical, life sciences, labs, and industrial manufacturing projects, from design phase to construction close‑out. You will coordinate, review, and approve mechanical design plans; apply electrical engineering techniques; integrate future‑ready technologies; manage design and construction of electrical systems; oversee cross‑functional engineering teams; prepare technical reports; manage client relationships; and develop stakeholder relationships.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate, review and approve mechanical design plans, ensuring data integrity and compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Apply high‑level electrical engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements across project phases.
  • Plan and incorporate future‑ready techniques, concept development, operating strategies, and design requirements for safety and functionality.
  • Engage from project inception to completion in management of design and construction of electrical systems.
  • Oversee and monitor cross‑functional teams of engineers on multiple concurrent projects, handling budgets, hours, expenses, task completion, calculations, construction, compliance documentation, and regulatory analysis memos.
  • Prepare data visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, cross‑sections, and illustrations for interpretation or presentation of complex data.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations explaining research, findings, concepts, and recommendations.
  • Manage client relationships and provide key technical input on pursuit efforts.
  • Develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • 12+ years of post‑education experience in engineering, mechanical, and infrastructure design.
  • Licensed engineer required (multi‑state preferred).
  • Extensive knowledge of mechanical design in the healthcare industry.
  • Well‑known in the local community with an extensive network.
  • Proficiency in mechanical engineering principles, practices, processes, design/build, and permitting and project work issues.
  • Experience with mechanical planning, design, and construction management, including renovation, new design, and construction projects.
  • Solid knowledge of relevant engineering codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
  • Strong ability to perform mechanical engineering calculations and apply regulations.
  • Effectiveness at coordinating and directing others for safe, efficient task completion.
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • LEED AP Certification.
  • Previous healthcare or laboratory design experience.
  • 5+ years project management experience.
  • 40‑Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
