Overview

The Gas Engineer IV is a senior engineering professional responsible for leading the design, management, and delivery of large, complex natural gas distribution or transmission projects. This role provides advanced technical oversight, strategic project management, and leadership across multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective solutions that meet or exceed client and regulatory requirements. The Gas Engineer IV serves as a key technical expert and client liaison, providing direction on engineering standards, quality assurance, and constructability.

This position mentors junior engineers, drives continuous improvement initiatives, and supports business development through technical leadership and proposal input.

What you will do
  • Lead the full lifecycle of complex gas infrastructure projects, including concept development, feasibility, design, permitting, procurement, and construction support.
  • Manage large-scale or multiple concurrent projects, ensuring delivery within scope, schedule, and budget while maintaining high quality and safety standards.
  • Serve as the primary technical authority and client point of contact, ensuring strong communication, coordination, and responsiveness throughout project execution.
  • Provide advanced technical expertise in gas distribution and transmission system design, material selection, pressure regulation, and pipeline integrity management.
  • Develop and review detailed design drawings, calculations, specifications, and construction packages for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Oversee and coordinate multidisciplinary teams, including engineering, design, permitting, and field personnel.
  • Perform and review complex engineering analyses related to stress, flow, pressure drop, and pipeline sizing.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., DOT 49 CFR Part 192, ASME B31.8, ASTM, API, and utility standards).
  • Review and approve contract documents, change orders, and project amendments.
  • Provide mentorship, technical direction, and peer review for junior and mid-level engineers to develop team capability and maintain quality standards.
  • Support business development efforts, including proposal development, project scoping, and client presentations.
  • Lead quality control reviews, enforce quality assurance procedures, and contribute to technical standard updates.
  • Participate in risk assessments, constructability reviews, and value engineering initiatives.
  • Support project closeout activities, including as-built verification, lessons learned, and performance reporting.
Who you are
  • Expert knowledge of natural gas distribution and/or transmission design principles, materials, and construction methods.
  • Deep understanding of relevant codes, standards, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong leadership and project management skills with proven ability to manage large, complex projects.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Proficiency in engineering software such as Micro Station, AutoCAD, and GIS tools.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and project management software (Primavera P6, MS Project).
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to represent the company in client and regulatory meetings.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, lead, and develop engineering staff.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining technical excellence.
Your background
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, or related Engineering discipline required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • 9–12 years of progressive experience in natural gas distribution or transmission engineering, with at least 3 years in project leadership or supervisory roles.
  • Proven track record managing multidisciplinary teams and large-scale gas utility projects.
  • Experience working with clients such as Peoples Gas, Nicor, AGL or similar utilities preferred.
