The Live Sound Engineer is primarily responsible for assisting with the setup, loading in, operation, and loading out of concerts and shows, with a specific focus on sound reinforcement as needed. The Atlanta Symphony and Symphony Hall Live produce this addition to sound duties, the Live Sound Engineer supports and collaborates with stage and operations personnel in day-to-day operations. The engineer will work closely with the Artistic Director, personnel, and other members of the operations staff to achieve and uphold the high artistic standards of the Atlanta Symphony and Symphony Hall Live performances, both at home and on tour.
This is a full-time, year-round position based on the schedule of the Atlanta Symphony and Symphony Hall Live.
** Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
*** Event-to-event sound coordination: responsible for adjusting and resetting the sound system between different types of events (e.g., Live shows, classical concerts, education/FAM programs) to maintain consistency and readiness.
* Cross-departmental communication:
This person should be able to coordinate directly with departments like Education and others that may not have sound knowledge, helping to bridge technical gaps specific to each performance need.
* Read and follow paperwork and instructions to prep and maintain the audio system
* Assist in safe rigging for and focus on loudspeakers and other equipment
* Attend rehearsals, sound checks, concerts, and events as assigned
* Complete preshow equipment checks and operates live sound when assigned
* Maintain a professional appearance and attitude, particularly when interacting on stage, with musicians, staff, patrons, and other team members
* Attend to the musicians in a calm and professional manner
* Assist musicians with concert needs, including proper micing of instruments
* show playback systems
* Participate in executing sound reinforcement for shows
* Assist with the strike at the end of a show
* Maintain equipment and cable
* Ensure professional installation of audio equipment, as needed
** Qualifications****:
** To succeed in this role, an individual must effectively perform each essential duty. The listed requirements represent the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position.
Experience:
* Prior experience running sound and mixing wireless microphones for musical productions
* Experience in basic theatrical audio equipment, including mixing consoles, show control software, Mac computers, and wireless microphone setup
* Experience working with classical musicians preferred
* Knowledge of orchestral instruments
* Experience with live sound mixing of classical symphony orchestra
* Ability to read musical score
* College degree in technical theater or equivalent experience preferred

*** Must be skilled in following signal flow and basic audio connectors
* Must have strong listening, interpersonal, and communication skills
* Must be organized and able to interpret and follow directions
* Must be able to stay calm under pressure
* Ability to reliably work a variable schedule based on the season calendar
* Strong expertise in programming and mixing sound for musical theatre
* Strong expertise with computer networking and troubleshooting
* Strong expertise with electronics, soldering, and troubleshooting
* Familiarity with Dante, AVB, Milan, or other digital networking protocols preferred
* Proficiency with wireless microphones
* Proficiency with safely rigging loudspeakers at heights above 6 feet
