Construction Controller
Location: Atlanta, GA
Reports To: VP of Finance
FLSA: Exempt
Position SummaryThe Construction Controller oversees all financial operations of the company, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strong financial controls across job costing, budgeting, forecasting, and company-wide financial reporting. This role partners closely with project managers, operations leadership, and executive management to drive profitability, monitor financial performance, and support strategic decision‑making. The Controller plays a critical role in developing internal processes, strengthening accounting practices, and ensuring the financial health of construction projects and the overall business.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee all general ledger activity, month‑end and year‑end close processes.
- Prepare accurate financial statements, job cost reports, WIP schedules, and executive dashboards.
- Manage cash flow forecasting, treasury functions, and banking relationships.
- Ensure timely and accurate AP, AR, payroll, and billing processes.
- Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and company policies.
- Oversee and validate job costing, contract billing, and project financial performance.
- Partner with project managers to review budgets, change orders, labor costs, and margin forecasts.
- Analyze WIP reports and provide recommendations to leadership on project profitability.
- Ensure proper revenue recognition practices under percentage‑of‑completion or other applicable methods.
- Lead annual budgeting process, including revenue, expense, labor, and capital projections.
- Monitor budget variances and provide insights to improve accuracy and financial performance.
- Develop rolling forecasts to support operational and strategic decision‑making.
- Serve as financial advisor to operations, estimating, and project management teams.
- Implement and refine financial systems, reporting tools, and accounting software (Sage, Viewpoint, Procore Finance, Quick Books, etc.).
- Assist with contract review, insurance audits, and subcontractor compliance requirements.
- Ensure accurate tracking of equipment costs, overhead allocation, and project‑related expenses.
- Lead and mentor accounting team, promoting a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Establish clear processes for billing, collections, payroll, and month‑end close.
- Collaborate with HR, operations, and executive leadership on company‑wide initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state tax regulations, including sales/use tax and payroll tax.
- Prepare documentation for external audits and coordinate with auditors.
- Oversee licensing, insurance certificates, and financial compliance related to construction contracts.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience; construction industry experience strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, percentage‑of‑completion accounting, and contract billing.
- Proficiency with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300, Viewpoint Vista, Procore, CMiC, Quick Books).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work cross‑functionally and support both field and office operations.
- Experience managing an accounting team is a plus.
