JOB DESCRIPTION: Operates polysomnographic recording equipment used to record and evaluate sleep/wake pathology, including transcutaneous and End-Tidal CO2 monitoring. Scores polysomnographic recordings in preparation for physician interpretation. Performs other related duties as required.
Responsibilities- Operates and calibrates polysomnographic equipment.
- Reviews patient medical charts, confirms physician orders, and requested protocol to be performed.
- Interviews patients to assess current sleep patterns, medication allergies/conditions, current medications, and any alcohol or caffeine intake the day of the test.
- Performs research studies per protocol which may include full 10/20 EEGs and assisting with writing research protocol.
- Performs related patient processing and documentation procedures as necessary.
- Applies and removes electrodes and other equipment used in conjunction with polysomnography including EKG, EMG, EOG, airflow, and oximetry in clinic patients.
- Fits and troubleshoots PAP masks to optimize comfort and effectiveness.
- Applies and titrates CPAP, BiPAP, Adaptive Servo Ventilation (ASV), AVAPS/iVAPS AVAPS AE titrations and need for /application of supplemental oxygen based on physicians’ orders and established protocols.
- Preferred experience in advanced titrations and interpretation of patient tidal volume and need for pressure support in advanced disease patients such as those with chronic respiratory insufficiency, chronic respiratory failure, chronic hypoventilation including neuromuscular disease and COPD.
- Educates patients on use of CPAP/BiPAP.
- Monitors sleep recording, patient position in bed, as well as recognition of sleep pathology. Recognizes and records clinical and physiological events. Accurately scores polysomnographic records in preparation for physician interpretation.
- Professional Development:
Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services as appropriate. - Safety, Security and Health:
Cleans and disinfects equipment placed directly on patients. Monitors for adverse events in patients and acts accordingly and per protocol. - Staff Resource:
Participates in orientation and training of new staff for the sleep laboratory.
- A high school diploma or equivalent. Degree preferred. One year related experience.
- Must be a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist.
- A current BLS certification is required.
- PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs.; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs., 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs., 67-100% of the workday (constantly);
Lifting 50 lbs. max;
Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs.;
Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing). - Environmental factors vary by area; exposure to bio-hazardous materials, chemicals, electrical hazards, lighting, infection risk, shift work, and potential need for travel. Use of personal protective equipment may be required.
