Overview
Assistant Academic Research Scientist | School of Medicine - Pediatrics at Emory University. The Hong Lab studies the development and consequences of abnormal development in the kidney and identifies new biology and therapeutic targets in childhood and young adult kidney/brain cancers, including Wilms Tumor and cancers involving the SWI/SNF chromatin modifying complex.
The laboratory is housed within the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, with access to resources across Emory’s cancer centers and collaborations with Georgia Tech. Fellows are encouraged to observe clinical aspects of pediatric oncology to understand the impact of work on patients.
Responsibilities- Work with experimental platforms specific to the hiring Program.
- Design experiments, analyze data, and interpret and communicate results of basic and/or translational research.
- Review literature and apply advanced knowledge for protocol development.
- May assist in grant and other funding applications as appropriate.
- Perform other responsibilities as required.
- Depending on level of contribution, contribute to authorship on publications and develop expertise across laboratory platforms.
- Staff Scientists may have leadership responsibilities, overseeing quality and training of team members.
- Duties include designing, developing, and conducting research experiments.
- Develop or apply expert knowledge spanning murine studies, laboratory work, and computational biology.
- Assist in grant applications; may lead specific projects or areas with faculty approval.
- With approval of leading Emory faculty, may be principal investigator on grant proposals.
- Funding is secured for this position from grants and institutional funds.
- Mentor Dr. Hong is an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics with an Endowed Investigatorship focused on high-risk childhood kidney and brain cancers. Mentorship includes weekly meetings, grant-writing guidance, and project development with trainees and students.
- Environment combines clinicians, researchers, and professionals across Emory and partners such as Georgia Tech.
- Located in Atlanta, Emory University, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center.
- Collaborations with Georgia Tech and the Georgia Research Alliance; focus on advancing cancer treatment and training future researchers.
- PhD, or Master’s degree with two years of professional-level experience in a technical or research lab, or Bachelor's degree with four years of professional-level experience in a technical or research lab.
- Laboratory experience related to the area of assignment.
- Internship experience or pre-degree experience is not considered eligible work experience.
- Doctoral degree (PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent) with 2+ years of postdoctoral experience preferred, especially in Developmental Biology, Computational Biology/Data Sciences, Genetics and Molecular Biology, or Cancer Biology.
- Strong interpersonal and analytical skills with fluency in English; motivated, detail-oriented, goal-driven, and well-organized.
Position tasks are in-person at an Emory University location; remote work is not an option. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to employee.
