Skyland Trail, a nonprofit mental health residential treatment program for adults and adolescents in Atlanta, is seeking a Financial Counselor
.

Scope:
This position requires the ability to function effectively in stressful situations. The Financial Counselor must demonstrate skills in interpersonal communication and the handling of sensitive, confidential information, as well as initiative, attention to detail, teamwork, customer service orientation, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities
  • Performs pre‑admitting activities such as communicating with families prior to admission to gather necessary financial information.
  • Verifies patients' insurance information within 48 hours after receiving the VOB when all necessary details are available in Salesforce or from an email request from admissions.
  • Conducts in‑person appointments or phone conference calls with the Financial Responsible Party to explain insurance coverage, deductibles, out‑of‑pocket costs, copays, lifetime maximums, private‑pay costs, authorization processes, denials, and financial aid programs. Establishes patient liability based on insurance verification, applicable discounts (FA), and estimated costs of planned care.
  • Obtains required demographics and signatures on legal consents and insurance forms by phone or in‑person interview.
  • Explains charges, services, and Skyland Trail’s payment policy to residents.
  • Collects the initial payment for services on or before the day of admission.
  • Promotes positive public relations with residents, family members, and guests.
  • Receives, answers, and resolves incoming calls and emails.
  • Enter admitted client information into the Practice Management System and ensures accurate data entry for electronic claims.
  • Maintains financial chart, adds all prior email correspondence, online insurance verification at admission, and conducts chart audits within 24 hours of admission.
  • Performs other administrative tasks as assigned.

Qualifications
  • 3 years of experience with strong knowledge of medical documentation, insurance verification, third‑party reimbursements requirements, and financial liability calculations.
  • Superior customer service skills.
  • Associate’s degree preferred; certifications in medical administration, billing, coding, or related fields are a plus.
  • Experience interacting with managed‑care plans and other third‑party payers.
  • Ability to work with internal and external customers, including physicians, clinical providers, nurses, etc.
  • Behavior‑healthcare experience preferred.
  • Multitasker who can work in a fast‑paced environment with changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Excel, Word, and other IT systems relevant to the organization’s workflow.
  • HCFA and UB knowledge helpful.
  • Meet quarterly and yearly KPIs.
