Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collect pertinent medical information and review physician’s orders to identify the reason for examination and potential contraindications.
  • Explain procedures and position patients appropriately.
  • Select proper technical factors and operate the transducer over designated areas of the body.
  • Observe images and modify equipment parameters as necessary to obtain optimal images.
  • Freeze and print frames as needed; review records to ensure correct anatomy visualization.
  • Perform limited vascular studies (venous, arterial Doppler, carotid Doppler).
  • Assemble records for physician interpretation.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs on ultrasound equipment, referring major issues to supervisors.
  • Assist in orienting and training personnel.
  • Enter patient charges into the computer system.
  • Practice proper safety techniques according to hospital and departmental policies; report equipment malfunctions or unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Use skilled judgment to accurately identify normal versus abnormal findings.
  • Perform arterial evaluations to assess circulation and detect arterial sclerosis/stenosis using Doppler and color duplex ultrasound.
  • Perform venous evaluations to identify deep venous obstruction or venous valvular incompetence using Doppler and color duplex ultrasound.
  • Qualifications

    Requirements for Ultrasound Technologists

    Initial Qualifications:

    • Certification or eligibility for certification by ARDMS, ARRT (S), or CCI.
    • Must obtain certification within one year of hire or cross-training.
    • Certified in CPR or obtain certification within 90 days of employment.

    Continuing Education:

    Must comply with ARDMS, ARRT, or CCI continuing education requirements.

    Requirements for Vascular Technologists:

    • ARDMS certification in vascular technology RVT.
    • ARRT certification in vascular technology RT (VS).
    • CCI certification in vascular technology RVS.

    Must adhere to continuing education requirements of certifying organizations.

    Requirements for Sonographer or Mammography Technologist – Breast Ultrasound:

    • ARDMS or ARRT certification in breast ultrasound with current registration.
    • MQSA qualification if applicable.
    • 5 CEUs specific to breast ultrasound.
    • CPR certification or within 90 days of employment.

    Preferred qualifications include graduation from an accredited ultrasound program and prior ultrasound experience.

    Work Hours:

    8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
