The Georgia State University Police Department approaches its work with passion, striving for excellence and focusing on the safety of our campuses and community by providing safety services through professional community‑oriented policing. The department serves the university community and surrounding areas, ensuring a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and neighbors. Georgia State boasts one of the largest university police forces in the state with 160 officers across all six Atlanta metro campuses.
The Department is accredited and certified by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement (IACLE), and the State of Georgia Law Enforcement Certification Program.
- Patrol campus areas on foot or by motorized vehicle; issue citations and warnings.
- Direct traffic and enforce traffic laws and regulations.
- Maintain watch over buildings and grounds, checking doors and windows.
- Observe and investigate suspicious actions, people, and dangerous or defective conditions.
- Report and investigate accidents, vandalism, thefts, and fires; assist in locating lost or stolen property.
- Give directions and other information to the public; maintain records of accidents and investigations.
- Issue warnings and tickets to the public; advise students, faculty, and staff on campus regulations.
- Investigate traffic accidents, question drivers and witnesses, and assist injured persons; record pertinent data describing scenes and circumstances.
- Perform specialized police work to protect life and property, prevent violations, enforce laws on university property, and apprehend violators within police jurisdiction.
- High school diploma or GED and three years of experience with Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) certification as a Law Enforcement Officer.
- Considerable knowledge of standard police practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of the GSU campus and its traffic patterns.
- Knowledge of first aid; knowledge of fire prevention techniques.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to conduct investigations and prepare reports.
- Ability to enforce campus regulations.
