Summary
This is a public notice for Drug Enforcement Administration Criminal Investigator GL-1811-7/9/11 positions open to U.S. Citizens. A job announcement will be posted on USAJobs on January 12 and April 6, 2026.
Duties
- Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug related activities
- Prepare comprehensive and succinct criminal investigative reports and deliver briefings for senior personnel and other Federal, state, and local agencies
- Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities
- Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and other means
- Testify on behalf of the federal government in court or before grand juries
Basic Agent Training
- Applicants who have not completed previous federal law enforcement training must attend a 16‑week residential training program at the DEA Training Academy
- Current or former 1811 applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached)
Conditions of Employment
- U.S. citizenship required
- Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance
- Must sign a mobility agreement accepting relocation
- Complete a pre‑employment medical clearance and annual medical examinations
- Full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph required
- Selective Service registration or exemption for eligible males born after 12/31/59
- Age requirement: at least 21 and not older than 36 unless veteran or eligible federal civilian law enforcement retirement
- Pass the E‑Verify employment verification check
- Serve a 1‑year or 2‑year trial period to evaluate fitness and public interest
- Maintain a valid state driver’s license
- Subject to random drug testing
- Complete 16‑to‑20‑week Basic Agent Training (BAT) course if selected
Qualifications
All applicants must meet one of the basic qualification requirements described below for the GL‑07, GL‑09, or GL‑11 levels. Requirements may be met through experience, education, or a combination of both. Applicants must also submit supporting documentation such as transcripts or certificates when applying.
GL-07 (GL/GS‑05 level)
- One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GL/GS‑05 level, including investigating alleged or suspected violations of law, writing reports, and researching, collecting, and analyzing data
GL-09 (GL/GS‑07 level)
- One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GL/GS‑07 level, including assisting in investigations, collecting and analyzing data, writing reports, and testifying before courts or grand juries
GL-11 (GL/GS‑09 level)
- One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GL/GS‑09 level, demonstrating ability in conducting or supporting federal criminal investigations, developing operational plans, operating undercover, interviewing, and organizing evidence for prosecution
Education
Education may substitute for experience based on graduate level credit hours, superior academic achievement, or a combination of education and experience. Detailed requirements for graduate, senior, and foreign education are provided in the OPM Qualifications Standards Handbook and must be verified with official transcripts.
Appointment
Appointments will be made in accordance with 5 CFR 213.3210 (Schedule B), Excepted Service appointments, and may be converted to permanent career appointments after the third or fourth year.
Probationary/Trial Period
Selected candidates may be required to serve a 1‑to‑2‑year trial period during which performance, conduct, and overall fit with agency goals are evaluated. Upon completion, continuation of employment is contingent on certification of continued public interest advancement.
Law Enforcement Availability
Special Agents may be required to work substantial overtime, irregular schedules, and maintain availability for unscheduled work. Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP) is provided.
