The Assistant Vice President, Environmental, Health & Safety leads a high‑performing team responsible for the development, planning, and management of all environmental, health, and safety functions for Cox Automotive. This executive partners with senior leadership to drive a culture of safety, compliance, and continuous improvement, ensuring all brands, regions and functions—including automotive, auto auction, fleet services, and electric battery operations—operate to the highest standards and in full regulatory compliance.
The role is accountable for strategy, execution, and oversight of EHS programs impacting 20,000+ employees and thousands of customers.
- Lead and develop a team of EHS professionals who deliver on all aspects of the EHS strategy, programs, and compliance requirements across the enterprise.
- Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive EHS programs, policies, and procedures across all business units and locations.
- Guide the evolution of Cox Automotive's safety culture, embedding quality and continuous improvement (e.g., QHSE, 5S, LDM practices).
- Oversee compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.), including permitting, certification, and reporting.
- Engage and build trust with business leaders, serving as a technical expert and strategic advisor on EHS matters.
- Champion environmental stewardship, including air quality, wastewater, stormwater, spill prevention, waste management, and container management.
- Direct DOT compliance programs, including driver safety, fleet operations, and regulatory audits.
- Lead and standardize occupational safety, behavior‑based safety, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and workers' compensation programs.
- Oversee garage liability and risk management, ensuring robust controls and incident response protocols.
- Develop and deliver EHS training and education programs for all levels of the organization.
- Conduct and oversee internal and external EHS audits, drive corrective actions, and ensure ongoing compliance.
- Lead the EHS executive council and facilitate cross‑functional collaboration with business leaders and EHS professionals.
- Translate corporate, regional, and site goals into actionable performance plans and KPIs; track and report on EHS performance.
- Manage relationships with external consultants and regulatory agencies.
- Prepare and present annual strategic EHS plans, roadmaps, and progress reports to executive leadership.
- Foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement in all EHS matters.
- BA/BS degree required + 14 or more years of relevant work experience required in related field with at least 7 years experience in a leadership role
- OR MS degree + 12 years of experience
- OR Ph.D. degree + 9 years of experience
- OR 18+ years of experience with no degree
- Minimum 5 years relevant chemical, oil & gas, petrochemical or EV Battery industry experience with broad HSE knowledge
- Advanced knowledge in occupational safety programs acquired through education and training as well as through experience, preferably multiple years of experience in a manufacturing, distribution, research and development, retail facility or similar environment
- Substantial in‑depth knowledge of applicable regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT) and compliance measures including permitting and certification obtainment
- Substantial in‑depth experience developing and implementing enterprise‑wide safety and loss prevention programs
- Extensive experience providing both strategic and hands‑on support of safety for multiple regions
- Ability to work well in a dynamic and complex environment
- Must be technically organized, have excellent follow‑up skills as well as interpersonal skills to present information in manners which are usable based on a variety of audiences.
- Ability to interact and interface with all levels of the organization
