Position Title
Police Officer
Position SummaryProvides routine police services which include: the protection of life and property; foot and motorized patrol of assigned areas; enforcement of state laws, city ordinances, and College rules and regulations. This position conducts investigations of incidents and prepares reports to document a broad spectrum of occurrences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Ensures the safety and security of Spelman College staff, facilities, students, and visitors
- Ensures that all campus rules and regulations are enforced
- Exercises powers of arrest under provisions of current Georgia law
- Conducts investigations, collects evidence, and testifies in court
- Functions as communications dispatcher, answering phones and short‑wave radios, and performs related clerical tasks
- Conducts foot and/or motorized patrols of assigned areas
- Writes incident reports and interviews victims and witnesses
- Enforces traffic laws, rules, and regulations
High School diploma or equivalent plus current certification as a Peace Officer under Georgia P.O.S.T. guidelines at the time of employment is required.
Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, react calmly under emergency conditions, and cooperate with the public and fellow employees.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written, for conducting interviews, interrogations, observations, and preparing comprehensive records and reports.
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel), Outlook, and the Internet.
Must be able to work on an as‑needed basis, rotate to various shifts, and adapt staffing needs.
Must pass a pre‑employment drug test.

Certifications, Licenses, RestrictionsCurrent valid Georgia driver’s license is required.
Physical DemandsRegular duties include standing, walking, sitting, handling office supplies, operating computers, speaking, and hearing. Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, climb, or crawl, taste, smell, and lift or move up to 25 pounds. Ability to physically defend self and others and to effect apprehension of criminal suspects or individuals violating College rules is essential. Specific vision requirements include the ability to adjust focus.
