Position: Building Mechanical (HVAC) Engineer

We currently have an opportunity for a Building Mechanical Engineer to join our team. This role will work directly with engineers and other design staff to provide building mechanical and plumbing designs for facilities primarily serving the water and wastewater industries. Duties include assisting in the development of P&IDs, layout and design of equipment, design of building mechanical and plumbing systems, development of 3D models, production of contract documents, field investigations, and support during construction.

Additional responsibilities will include assisting the National Discipline Lead with updating company design standards and details. The successful candidate will enjoy working in a collaborative multi-discipline environment to develop designs for new facilities, expansions, upgrades and retrofits. Projects include both conventional design/bid/build and alternative delivery such as design/build.

Job Summary

The TC1, Building Mechanical Engineering role assists in developing HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler calculations. The role interprets mechanical, plumbing, building, and fire codes to ensure compliance with industry standards. The role involves sizing ductwork, plumbing, and fire sprinkler distribution systems. The role also selects appropriate HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler equipment for various projects. Additionally, the role drafts and models these systems using AutoCAD and Revit software.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine tasks in HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler calculations as per provided guidelines.
  • Learn to interpret mechanical, plumbing, building, and fire codes under supervision and guidance.
  • Develop a basic understanding of NFPA standards and their application.
  • Understand and apply the fundamentals of sizing ductwork, plumbing, and fire sprinkler distribution systems.
  • Use software tools to draft and model HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler systems.
  • Gain proficiency in using software to develop specifications for HVAC, plumbing and fire sprinkler equipment.
  • Review HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler drawings/specifications and coordinate related tasks with other engineering disciplines.
  • Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.
Skills and Competencies
  • Sound basics in mechanical engineering concepts and principles.
  • Ability to use engineering software and tools for drafting and modeling.
  • Basic understanding of HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler systems and standards.
  • Good problem-solving skills for handling routine tasks.
Experience
  • Typically requires a minimum of 0-2 years of relevant field experience and previous exposure to HVAC, plumbing, fire sprinkler systems or related experience.
  • Encouraged to certify in the SMS Framework in the first six months of being in the role.
Education
  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field or equivalent experience is required.
  • Has passed or is working towards passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam required for Engineer in Training registration.
Salary Range

The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A: $64,000 - $87,000

Location B: $71,000 - $96,000
