Position Summary
Sterile Processing Technician II is an intermediate, certified role responsible for independently performing all aspects of instrument decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and distribution in accordance with manufacturer instructions, departmental policies, and applicable regulatory standards. This position demonstrates consistent proficiency, sound judgement, and accountability in daily operations while maintaining high quality and productivity expectations. Technician II serves as a resource to entry‑level staff, assists with training and mentoring, and actively supports quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and continuous process improvement efforts.
This role plays a key part in ensuring patient safety, surgical readiness, and compliance with AAMI and Joint Commission standards.
Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent.
License/Certification: Certification (CRCST or CBSPD).
Experience: Minimum of 1‑2 years in a Sterile Processing Department (SPD), Central Sterile, or equivalent healthcare reprocessing environment. Demonstrated independent competency in decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instruments; following and interpreting manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFUs); operating sterilizers, washers‑disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners, and related equipment. Experience using instrument tracking systems (e.g., SPM, T‑DOC, Censi Trac, or equivalent). Exposure to regulatory standards, including AAMI ST79 and other applicable AAMI standards (working knowledge) and Joint Commission or CMS survey expectations (practical awareness).
PerformanceExpectations
- Independently perform all sterile processing functions.
- Monitor sterilization and biological indicator results for compliance.
- Troubleshoot equipment and instrument issues.
- Assist with inventory management, loaner/consignment processing, and case cart preparation.
- Train and mentor Technician I staff.
- Collaborate with OR staff and vendors to ensure surgical readiness.
- Participate in audits, quality checks, and process improvements.
Potential exposure to blood borne pathogens and infectious diseases. Essential functions include the tasks described in the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.
Reporting RelationshipSterile Processing Technician II reports directly to the Sterile Processing Supervisor or Manager and works under direct supervision with day‑to‑day guidance from assigned Lead technicians or preceptors.
