Registered Nurse – Critical Care Float Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Registered Nurse is a member of the interdisciplinary team working in collaboration with the Physician. The RN applies the nursing care process consistent with their license and/or certification, including initiation of culturally competent continuum of care in inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. They oversee coordination of the interdisciplinary plan of care to ensure consistency with the medical treatment plan.
Patient care process:
- Assessment – orderly identification, gathering, and organization of subjective and objective data concerning the patient/family/significant other, including physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural aspects.
- Planning – identification of problems and desired outcomes with a documented plan of care that provides direction for the patient/family and interdisciplinary team.
- Intervention – specific interventions or orders implemented consistently with the plan of care and medical treatment plan.
- Evaluation – determine effectiveness of interventions, document required actions, and initiate reassessment and revisions as needed.
- Based on findings: problems identified and prioritized by biophysical, psychological, environmental, self‑care, educational, and social status; goals aligned with problems; education critical for patient empowerment.
Laboratory/diagnostic services: RN may perform limited laboratory services, including patient identification and specimen collection, sample processing, quality control testing, instrument maintenance, reporting results, and maintaining competency.
The RN supports performance‑improvement initiatives, leads other team members, and participates in educational activities to promote professional growth.
Qualifications Education / LicenseGraduate of an accredited nursing school; BSN preferred. Current RN licensure in the State of New Jersey or a current multi‑state license. BLS required. Valid NJ Driver’s License required for Adult and Child Partial Programs.
ExperienceProficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at hire; skill required within 30‑60 days. Specialty experience and certifications vary by unit.
Specialty Experience & Certifications- Emergency Room – 2–4 years medical/surgical experience preferred; 2 years emergency room experience preferred. ACLS required within 6 months; ATCN/TNCC completion after 24 months; 8 contact hours of basic trauma and stroke education per year.
- Labor and Delivery – 2–4 years experience preferred. ACLS and NRP required within 6 months and 1 year respectively.
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit / Intermediate Care Unit – 2–4 years neonatal experience preferred. NRP required within 1 year.
- Mother/Baby Unit (OB) – 2–4 years mother/baby experience preferred. NRP required within 1 year.
- Perinatology – 3 years labor and delivery experience preferred. OB certification required.
- Operating Room – Minimum 1 year medical/surgical experience; 1–2 years OR experience preferred. CNOR preferred. ACLS preferred.
- Critical Care (ICU) – 2–4 years medical/surgical experience preferred; 1–2 years critical care preferred. ACLS required within 1 year. CCRN preferred.
- Medical/Surgical (Various Sites) – 1–2 years experience preferred; ACLS required within 6 months.
- Dialysis (Renal, Acute) – 1–2 years experience preferred; ACLS required within 1 year.
- Psychiatry – 1–2 years experience preferred; crisis prevention and intervention education required within 6 months; current NJ State Certification as a Mental Health Screener required.
- Pediatrics – 1–2 years experience preferred; PALS required within 1 year.
- Radiology (Admitting) – 2–4 years experience preferred; ACLS and PALS required within 1 year.
- Cath Lab – 1–2 years critical care, ER, or telemetry experience preferred; ACLS required.
- Trauma ICU – 1 year trauma experience required; ACLS, PALS & ATCN required within 1 year.
- Oncology – 1–2 years medical/surgical experience preferred; chemotherapy experience preferred; ACLS required within 1 year; chemotherapy certification preferred.
- Endoscopy – Minimum 2 years experience; ACLS required within 6 months; PALS, CCRN, CGRN preferred.
