The Fiber Technician II position is accountable for maintaining and expanding Shentel's fiber optic network. The fiber technician is a field position, works in various weather conditions, and is responsible for intermediate to complex fiber preparation, splicing, installation and the repair of fiber optic cable from the POP to the customer premise using tools and fusion splicing equipment. Under minimal supervision, performs testing and certification of fiber.
Must be able to communicate professionally and effectively with customers, contractors, and company personnel.
High School Diploma is required for the role.
Associate's/Technical Degree - two years is preferred for the role.
Experience Level- 2 years of Fiber Splicing experience is Required.
- 2 years of Field Network/Installation/Maintenance/Construction experience is Required.
- 2 years of Telecommunications experience is Required.
- Ability to fusion splice both loose tube single and ribbon fibers.
- Ability to prep and splice a mid‑sheath "ring‑cut" splice.
- Ability to use all test equipment (OTDR, fiber scope, identifier, etc) to validate fiber.
- Ability to distinguish between different fiber color codes and strands.
- Ability to ribbonize loose tube fibers.
- Ability to be on‑call 24 hours a day for emergency repair.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as the
- needs of the business necessitate.
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow engineering drawings/schematics.
- Ability to complete Light Brigade Certification, or relevant certification:
Fiber Optics 1‑2‑3, and Advanced OSP Technician. - Meticulous attention to detail, standards, and documentation.
- Basic computer skills.
