At SSAB, Mill Metallurgist optimizes steel mill operations, drives product and quality improvements, analyzes data for actionable insights, and ensures compliance through innovative metallurgical practices.
Main Responsibilities / Essential Functions- Works independently, with ability in at least one major area of mill operations (Primary, Rolling and Finishing, Heat Treatment.)
- Develops operating practices to produce quality steel products meeting or exceeding industry standards and customer requirements.
- Reviews manufacturing practices on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance with established operating practices.
- Design, execution and reporting of product development and quality improvement trials with some guidance from Senior Metallurgist.
- Interprets data and makes recommendations to Operations management.
- Investigates quality-related production problems and collaborates with other departments to find cost-effective solutions.
- Implements SPC techniques for quality and productivity enhancements.
- Manages disposition of material which does not meet requirements for intended application.
- Complete required training within designated time frames and attend all required meetings.
- Understand and support the company’s goals and values and adhere to company, department, safety, quality, environmental, and ethics policies and procedures.
Required
- B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering or related discipline
- At least 2 years of relevant post-graduate education or industry experience and/or demonstrated technical proficiency.
- Very good computer skills, including Microsoft 365 proficiency and the ability to navigate multiple databases.
- Strong analytical capability and problem-solving skills including some skill with SPC
- Good communication, collaboration, interpersonal and teamwork skills.

- Work experience in a manufacturing environment (preferably with a metallurgical focus)
