Position: Physical Education/Health Teacher
Location: High School
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students' health and wellness, physical skills and abilities, strength, agility, poise, coordination, and teamwork; to develop students' understanding of the importance of exercise to physical and mental well-being; and to motivate students to work towards physical fitness, hygiene, and good health.
Essential Functions- Develops and administers physical education and health classes consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Teaches knowledge of, and develops skills and abilities in health, physical fitness, rhythm and dance, coordination and agility, exercise, and sports.
- Develops students' concepts in leadership, teamwork, responsibility and social skills; provides a safe and optimal learning environment; and provides appropriate feedback regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in health/physical education activities, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student needs, including students with special needs.
- Continues to acquire professional knowledge and stay informed of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
- Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
- Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within health/physical education and grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
- Selects and requisitions appropriate instructional aids and supplies; maintains inventory records.
- Inspects equipment and field areas to ensure they are in good and safe working order.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of current physical education and health instructional methods, including differentiated instruction.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations regarding education and students, as well as health education.
- Knowledge of physiology, health and nutrition, biology and biological functions, anatomy, hygiene, exercise, and best practices to promote physical and mental well-being.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
- Massachusetts State Certification as a Physical Education Teacher
- Massachusetts State Certification as a Health Teacher preferred
- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment
- Master's Degree preferred
- Successful prior teaching experience at the high school level preferred
FY26 Salary range: $64,004 - $108,744
FY27 to be determined
