Inspector of Buildings/Building Commissioner of Buildings & Zoning Enforcement Officer – Protective Inspection Department

The City of Attleboro, Protective Inspection Department seeks an Inspector of Buildings/Building Commissioner of Buildings & Zoning Enforcement Officer to direct the operations of the Protective Inspection Department. The position is responsible for management and inspectional work related to the enforcement and interpretation of the Massachusetts Building Code, City Zoning Ordinance and other applicable codes relating to building construction, land use and flood plains.
Duties include supervising department employees and operations; developing and administering the department budget; assigning caseloads; overseeing enforcement of building, mechanical and zoning codes; and interpreting and monitoring zoning ordinances. Serves as a liaison to City boards, commissions and departments and works with the City Solicitor on code and zoning violations. Reviews building and site plans, performs residential and commercial inspections, responds to complaints and provides technical assistance to City departments, attorneys and the general public.
Takes appropriate enforcement action when necessary and responds to emergency public safety situations. Attends applicable BBRS, State Board of Appeals and court hearings. Performs related administrative and inspectional work as required.
Requires a High School diploma and advanced technical training and five years of experience in the supervision of building construction or design, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field is preferred.
Requires thorough knowledge of building construction, the Massachusetts Building Code, local zoning ordinances, Architectural Access Rules and Regulations and other applicable laws and regulations. Must be able to read and interpret building plans, specifications and regulations; communicate effectively with the public; and enforce regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially.
Current certification as a Massachusetts Local Inspector by testing and a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license are required. State certification as a Certified Building Official and Building Commissioner must be obtained within 18 months. State approval letter for testing is required pursuant to 780 CMR 110R7.
