The Advanced Facilities / Controlled Environments Superintendent is responsible for leading field operations and overseeing all on-site construction activities for technically complex commercial, industrial, and mission-critical projects. This includes advanced manufacturing facilities, semiconductor plants, pharmaceutical and life sciences facilities, data centers, controlled environments, clean rooms, and other specialized construction projects.
This position serves as the primary field leader responsible for ensuring projects are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with contract documents, quality standards, and project schedules. The Superintendent coordinates subcontractors, self-perform crews, owners, architects, engineers, inspectors, commissioning teams, and trade partners while driving field productivity, safety, quality, and schedule performance.
The ideal candidate has strong General Contractor superintendent experience managing complex building systems, extensive MEP coordination, commissioning-intensive work, and demanding quality standards. Experience with controlled environments and cleanroom construction is highly desirable but not required.
This position requires 100% project-based travel.
Most assignments are located outside of Michigan and may require extended stays at project locations across the United States. Candidates must be willing and able to travel full-time for project assignments.
Per diem, travel benefits, and project-specific incentives may be available based on project location and assignment.
Key Responsibilities- Provide daily leadership and oversight of all field operations, subcontractors, vendors, and site personnel.
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and safety-focused jobsite culture.
- Review project contracts, drawings, specifications, schedules, and quality requirements.
- Develop and maintain detailed work plans that align with project milestones and client expectations.
- Coordinate manpower, equipment, material deliveries, staging areas, logistics plans, and work sequencing.
- Partner with Project Managers and Scheduling teams to maintain project schedules and recovery plans when needed.
- Identify constructability issues, design conflicts, and schedule risks and proactively develop solutions.
- Lead daily huddles, planning sessions, subcontractor coordination meetings, and progress reviews.
- Monitor production rates and drive continuous improvements in field performance.
- Oversee construction activities within advanced manufacturing, mission critical, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, life sciences, data center, controlled environment, and cleanroom facilities.
- Coordinate complex construction sequencing in active manufacturing and operational facilities.
- Ensure compliance with project-specific environmental controls, contamination control requirements, cleanliness standards, and client protocols.
- Verify proper installation of architectural systems, specialty interiors, cleanroom components, containment systems, and building envelope elements.
- Coordinate closely with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, controls, process systems, and specialty vendors.
- Lead and support commissioning readiness activities, turnover planning, startup coordination, and facility activation requirements.
- Manage construction activities involving complex utility infrastructure, process systems, and critical building systems.
- Support clean-build protocols, quality inspections, and environmental control measures where required.
- Ensure critical milestone dates are achieved through detailed planning and execution.
- Promote and enforce all company and project-specific safety programs.
- Conduct daily safety meetings, pre-task planning sessions, and jobsite inspections.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company requirements, and client safety expectations.
- Verify all employees and subcontractors have completed required orientations and submitted necessary documentation.
- Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and take immediate corrective action.
- Support incident investigations and implementation of corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate safety documentation and reports.
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with project drawings, specifications, manufacturer requirements, and quality standards.
- Conduct regular field inspections and verify installation tolerances and workmanship.
- Coordinate inspections with owners, architects, engineers, testing agencies, commissioning authorities, and regulatory officials.
- Monitor and document quality performance throughout all phases of construction.
- Manage punch list completion and corrective action tracking.
- Support commissioning documentation, turnover packages, facility validation activities, and closeout requirements.
