The Role
A Mechanical Engineering Lead ensures technical solutions meet project requirements on quality and timeline, drives design teams to resolve gaps, and acts as the internal expert on customer needs. They validate third‑party equipment, mitigate risks, and support both local and remote facilities through strategic collaboration and design oversight. This position reports to Engineering Manager.
Key Responsibilities- Ensure technical solutions align with committed functional requirements across all division projects.
- Own and develop project technical requirements, guiding design teams to resolve gaps.
- Act as the internal expert on customer processes and products to inform design decisions.
- Select and validate third‑party equipment to meet scope and specifications.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks throughout the project lifecycle.
- Lead, present and participate in design reviews to ensure alignment with project goals – timeline, budget and quality.
- Collaborate with Project Managers on scope changes to achieve customer and company alignment.
- Provide feedback to Engineering Leaders to improve design standards and reduce errors.
- Support resolution of design issues impacting FAT and SAT approvals.
- Participate in proposal reviews and support customer site visits to capture as‑built conditions.
- Experience with multi‑disciplinary project engineering in a production environment.
- Strong aptitude for balancing and documenting a high volume of constraints and interdependencies when tackling system‑level design challenges.
- Proven track record in hitting key project milestones.
- Direct design experience (conceptual and full solutions) of automated production equipment to understand real‑world challenges and associated risk areas.
- Proficiency in NX – Modeling and Drafting. Proficiency in Solid Works would be a plus.
- Experience with developing and evaluating full system processes, material flow, inputs/outputs, throughput and OEE, product handling, process validation, etc.
- Deep understanding of good engineering discipline and best practices.
- Strong analytical and methodical approach to break down complex problems into simple steps.
- Proven organizational, negotiation, communication and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to coach a team on technical concepts in order to create buy‑in.
- Ability to process information, organize and prioritize tasks, exercise sound judgment and work without direct supervision in a team environment.
- Reliable transportation and an ability to travel; leads should have the ability to travel within the US and Canada.
- Relentless pursuit of learning and growth in the world of industrial automation.
- Experience in Automotive industry preferably Body shop – BIW & Closures.
- Design experience using GM tool kit and GM body shop standards – GMD
1. - Proficiency in MS Office and engineering calculation software.
