Gasoline Engine Controls Development Engineer

Responsible for developing new features and enhancing existing algorithms. The role involves working closely with cross‑functional teams using various tools (vehicle, HIL, dyno, virtual environments, rapid prototyping) through the V‑model software development process to ensure the quality and robustness of production algorithms.

The controls engineer interfaces with systems and calibration teams to fully understand requirements, develop implementation strategies, assess compliance and robustness, ensure ease of calibration, and document impacts against regulatory requirements. Responsibilities include implementing designs efficiently and validating them against requirements in both virtual and physical environments throughout the production process, providing technical guidance, training, and acting as an expert in their field.

Controls algorithm development typically begins as an advanced effort but must ultimately meet program timelines and con‑form to high‑level functional requirements. The successful candidate will manage projects through planning, tracking, and presenting technical reports to management and project chiefs and will participate in decision‑making regarding control strategy design to achieve functional objectives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Reading, understanding, and approving the requirements defined in CFTS documents from the Controls Features team.
  • Developing the architecture and defining interfaces of Software Components (SWC).
  • Creating interface files (ARXML) that are compliant with Autosar specifications.
  • Integrating Autosar composition files and ensuring no unconnected interface ports across SWCs.
  • Analyzing CAN DBC files to identify and implement new messages and signals between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and other nodes.
  • Implementing interfaces for On‑Board Diagnostics (OBD), Function Inhibition Identifiers (FIDs), Data Identifiers (DIDs), Legislative Diagnostic Identifiers (PIDs), and Non‑Volatile Random Access Memory (NVRAM).
  • Defining Variant Management implementation to enable or disable features/functionality based on program/engine/vehicle, optimizing resources.
  • Documenting and implementing requirements in the CCDD.
  • Designing and documenting controls algorithms harmonized across platforms and architecture variants.
  • Linking high‑level requirements to implementation requirements and model.
  • Generating Model In The Loop (MIL) reports.
  • Automatically generating code and Autosar Runtime Environment (RTE) using an integration pipeline.
  • Generating local prototype software builds for embedded and integrated testing.
  • Writing and storing Design Verification Plans (Controls DVP) and verifying them at Hardware In The Loop (HIL) simulator, with report generation (DVP&R).
  • Updating artifacts for generation of Algorithm Description Document (ADD).
  • Explaining controls algorithms to stakeholders, such as Calibration Teams.
  • Tracking features defined as Auxiliary Emissions Control Devices.
  • Attending Requirements Review Board and providing justifications of impacts on Auxiliary Emissions Control Devices.
  • Providing Controls Design Review tracking documents, confirming changes are complete and tested per Agile Definition of Done.
  • Actively participating in Agile framework recurring meetings (daily standups, Big Room Planning, Sprint Planning Ceremonies).
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent engineering degree, with experience in controls/calibration of gasoline spark‑ignition engines.
  • Excellent knowledge of internal combustion engines.
  • Knowledge of modern and classical control principles.
  • Experience in data acquisition, including collecting and processing data.
  • 5+ years of experience in engine development, emissions development, engine technologies, and competitive products.
  • Outstanding problem‑solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to work independently.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, automotive engineering or related field from an ABET‑accredited university.
  • Experience with powertrain…
