Cost Engineer

Location: Auburn Hills, MI (Onsite)
Schedule: Full-Time | Day Shift
Travel: 5–10%

Position Summary

The Cost Engineer develops detailed cost estimates for automotive components and tooling using activity-based costing methodologies. This role analyzes bills of material (BOMs), engineering drawings, specifications, and manufacturing processes to estimate material, labor, manufacturing, and tooling costs.

The Cost Engineer partners with Engineering, Purchasing, Finance, Suppliers, and Global Cost Engineering teams to support supplier negotiations, benchmarking, value optimization, and design-to-cost initiatives throughout the product lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop component and tooling cost estimates for new vehicle programs.
  • Perform detailed should-cost analyses using bottom-up manufacturing methodologies.
  • Support Design-to-Cost initiatives and identify cost reduction opportunities.
  • Assist Purchasing during supplier negotiations through supplier cost breakdown and gap analysis reviews.
  • Conduct benchmarking, value optimization, and competitive cost analyses.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Purchasing, Suppliers, and Global Cost Engineering teams.
  • Support cost convergence activities from concept development through serial production.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in automotive manufacturing, engineering, tooling, purchasing, cost engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, tooling, and assembly methods.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and BOMs.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Engineering and Purchasing teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with activity-based costing and cost modeling.
  • Background in Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, Tool Development, Component Purchasing, or Cost Engineering.
  • Automotive interior component experience in one or more of the following commodities:
    • Soft Trim
    • Hard Trim
    • Carpet Systems
    • NVH/Insulators
    • Headliners
    • Floor Consoles
    • Door Trim
    • Sun Visors
    • Grab Handles
    • Complete Seat Systems
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as:
    • Thermoforming
    • Compression Molding
    • Injection Molding
    • Foaming
    • Sewing & Trimming
    • Seat Assembly
  • Experience supporting supplier negotiations and cost reduction initiatives.
