Job Purpose
The UL Certification Engineer plays a key role in ensuring Borg Warner's energy storage and battery system products achieve and maintain compliance with applicable safety, certification, and regulatory standards. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Engineering, this position serves as the technical lead for certification activities, partnering closely with Engineering, Quality, Product Management, and third-party certification organizations. This role supports products from concept through commercialization by developing certification strategies, managing compliance requirements, coordinating testing activities, and helping ensure safe, reliable product launches.
Key Responsibilities- Lead product certification activities for battery and energy storage products, including development of certification plans and roadmaps.
- Serve as the primary technical liaison with UL and other regulatory and certification organizations.
- Interpret applicable standards and regulatory requirements and translate them into engineering and compliance requirements.
- Partner with engineering teams to integrate compliance and functional safety requirements throughout product development.
- Develop and maintain certification documentation, compliance matrices, and traceability records.
- Coordinate certification testing activities, witness testing, audits, and resolution of certification findings.
- Support safety analyses, risk assessments, and functional safety activities for electrical, electronic, and software systems.
- Provide technical guidance to cross-functional teams regarding product compliance, safety, and certification requirements.
- Support customer, regulatory, and internal audits by providing accurate compliance documentation.
- Drive continuous improvement of certification processes and certification readiness across programs.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience supporting Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) or renewable energy products.
- 5+ years of experience in product certification, compliance engineering, systems engineering, or functional safety.
- Experience working with UL, TÜV, or other recognized certification organizations.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, embedded controls, and product development processes.
- Experience developing technical documentation and compliance evidence packages.
- Strong communication and project management skills with the ability to work across cross-functional
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience supporting Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) or renewable energy products.
- 5+ years of experience in product certification, compliance engineering, systems engineering, or functional safety.
- Experience working with UL, TÜV, or other recognized certification organizations.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, embedded controls, and product development processes.
- Experience developing technical documentation and compliance evidence packages.
- Strong communication and project management skills with the ability to work across cross-functional
- Knowledge of industry standards such as UL 1973, UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 1998, IEC 61508, or similar safety standards.
- Experience with functional safety assessments, audits, and requirements management.
- Familiarity with battery management systems, high-voltage electrical architectures, and energy storage technologies.
- Salary Range: $107,600 - $147,950
