JobOverview
The General Accounting Office (GAO), in the University’s Office of the CFO (OCFO), oversees the integrity of the University’s financial records and systems. It ensures that transactions entered into the General Ledger comply with GAAP and the University’s accounting policies. The Office promotes efficient resource stewardship in compliance with laws, regulations, and reporting requirements. This role reports to the Director of Campus Accounting and assists with the review and processing of general ledger transactions for the assigned unit, supporting month‑end close activities, special projects, and general ledger review.
The position demands expert accounting skills, judgment, teamwork and excellent customer service, and provides a growth path to Senior Accountant.
- Review, reconcile, and verify general ledger activity and balances for assigned unit(s) on a monthly basis.
- Ensure general ledger accounts are fully reconciled each month or quarter and prepare adjusting journal entries when required.
- Prepare supporting documentation for monthly closing entries.
- Monitor unit‑based fund accounting and ensure compliance with utilization of temporarily restricted (TR) funds.
- Complete Payroll Accounting Adjustments and Deposit Tickets for assigned unit(s) when requested.
- Participate in user acceptance training for Workday financial system updates.
- Coordinate with unit‑level financial management administrators.
- Coordinate with the unit’s Procurement Analyst as needed.
- Participate in campus and university‑wide financial meetings, task forces, and working groups as assigned.
- Attend and participate in mandatory and recommended training and development opportunities.
- Provide back‑up to other accountants as needed.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
- 2‑3 years progressive experience in financial accounting and reporting.
- Understanding of the University’s cost center hierarchy, chart of accounts, and budgeted accounts.
- Strong Excel and general data analysis skills, including ability to identify errors, challenges, and process improvement opportunities.
- Ability to run and utilize financial system reports for management purposes.
- Professional demeanor, strong written and verbal communication skills, and exceptional customer‑service orientation.
- Attention to detail, creativity, strong time‑management skills, and the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Experience in a complex higher‑education institution or not‑for‑profit organization is a plus.
